LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Columbia Country Club - Designed by Dave Mackey

Reviewed by Pete Dixon March 2001

This is a fictional course and Dave's first APCD release to open forum that I am aware.

This is a difficult course to describe, it is green, and in fact it is greener than Robin Hood's tights on National green day! The planting and custom mountainous/sea panorama are extremely unique, the mountains almost have a blue tinge to them, I have tried to find Moldy's email to ask him of the fictional setting but have failed, so I am afraid I can't pin it down.

Back to the easy bit, is it any good? Well quite simply, yes it is. Once you have got over the initial shock of the greenness you will be very impressed at the views from the tees and all the way around the course.

The holes have been well designed, hazards have been strategically placed and there are plenty of thought provoking risk/reward shots to be found.

The use of the APCD is excellent, the custom terrains blend in smoothly, that is fairways, light rough, rough, greens and fringes as do the tees which are wonderfully presented and give stunning views of the hole ahead.

Bunkers are finished off very well and they have good depth and texture, the planting is also thoughtfully positioned and just right in its amounts and under planting.

Greens look superb and they have subtle breaks that make them tricky to deal with, the fringe and elevations are also well handled.

Fairways undulate perfectly and any elevation changes are flawless, a cut strip before going into the rough proper compliments the custom texture.

There is plenty of water in the form of lakes and also, what I presume is the sea that can be seen in the panorama. You get some nice glimpses of it through the trees when you are putting. The lakes are finished off really well and have good reflections and there are plenty of streams running into these.

Best Hole: There are just too many and the choice is too hard, so you choose!!

Overall: This is a course, and there are few of them, that no matter where you land, your next shot is going to be a treat visually to play, this is coupled with fine playability and excellent skills with the APCD. The uniqueness and greenness of it may put some off, it isn't your normal run of the mill course but to me it is a winner and all for only 17MB. The question has to be asked, where have you been Moldy?? And what is your next course?
