LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Matt Lilly

This course was originally released as one of the first from the APCD and was one of the better small downloads. It is an English wooded course with tricky greens and difficult pot bunkers.

View from the 1st: The course appears much more sharper now that it has been re-done. It also looks like some new textures were applied. This is a heavily wooded course and drives need to be accurate off the tee. The first green is not what I consider easy, but it does not reach the point of frustrating. Some thought will have to be given to line and speed, especially when playing fast. For the most part, they seem fair when played M/M/.

Hole 2: A sharp dogleg to the right is the story here, but the driver can still be used. It was during my second shot that I noticed the paths, which are nicely done. Posts were placed around sharp corners and turns as well. Most bunkers are pot bunkers, and there is no lip present. The sand seems to meet the rough abruptly, so perhaps some sort of transition would have looked nicer.

Hole 3: Once again, a difficult green. Some areas could prove to be a true test if played with the fast setting.

Hole 4: A beautiful par 3. Six bunkers guard against any shots left short. Planting is nicely done around the pond too.

Hole 7: While most of the course is well done, the bunkers seem unnatural to me. While taking an approach shot, they appeared to smooth and abrupt with transitions. Once again, perhaps something that can be addressed in future designs.

Hole 10: Beautiful water plants adorn the area in front of the tee box. A nice visual treat.

Hole 12: A nice, basic par 3. However, the path leading behind the green appears very steep. I'm not certain a cart in real life could make it up.

Hole 15: Once again, water planting is excellent while an appropriate stone bridge leads the way to the opposite side. Grassy underbrush occupies most of the area beneath the tress.

Hole 16: What a gorgeous hole. Wild grasses are scattered around the lake while the approach shot treats the player to a very well done green area. Stonework supports and slightly elevates the green while three bunkers protect the front portion.

Hole 17: Again, planting is sufficient and not overdone. Jim seems to have a knack for this. It's a blind shot into the green as a mound of grass hovers over the front region. Those pot bunkers catch anything long. A difficult hole.

Hole 18: Although minuscule, I don't care for the chosen clubhouse. It doesn't seem to fit the course and in my opinion, looks a tad cartoonish. Of course, this is small in the scheme of things. Elevations around the green are also very smooth.

Good Points- Planting flourished throughout, and the layout was very natural.

What Needs Work- For me, basically the bunkers were what needed a little extra devotion.

Favorite Hole- #16.

Final Thoughts- A wonderful and significant re-make of an already good course. This one is especially 56k friendly and will have a permanent spot on my hard-drive. If you have limited download capabilities or like English woodland courses, this might be one to consider.
