LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Matt Lilly

While Chuck has released a few other courses, his most recognizable effort was Crocodile Falls, which was released just prior to Crowning Hills. Large elevation changes were the dramatic trademark for Crocodile Falls, so I am sure that will at least be a minor feature on Crowning Hills. As the name suggests, all of the greens are 'crowned'. In other words, the outer edges all slope away from the green, often drastically. In addition, the main boundary from the green is the fairway. It was a characteristic I had not previously encountered.

View from the 1st: Unfortunately, the thing which first jumped out at me was the sharp edges, especially visible in the top view. The waste area appeared especially rough. Corners made drastic direction changes, and I think they could have been smoothed out. Pine needles and other foliage provide the prominent groundcover. Some areas look to be a little overplanted, but it never became distracting.

Layout: The layout provides a good challenge and you must often consider your shot options, especially with the small and severely sloped greens. As far as a Links course goes, the layout is sound. I think it would be way to hard in real life though.

Hole 5: This hole provides a true test. A long uphill second shot steers you towards one of those famous dwarfed greens. This hole could be made even more of a challenge with wind.

Hole 6: The tee shot will head over a protruding rock outcropping. The rock formation was very well done, again displaying Chuck's ability with rugged terrain.

Hole 7: Bunkers appear to have rough edges and some areas of elevation appear a bit abrupt.

Hole 8: A nice par three which has a brook flowing across the center of it. A small plank bridges the gap. I happened to notice hazard stakes were included along with some water planting. Don't miss to the left or you will find yourself in a deep gully on your next shot.

Hole 9: I liked the pot bunker construction on this hole. It was reinforced with railroad ties and stood guard before the green as an American flag loomed in the background. Careful of your shot comes up short, because it is possible for the shot to trickle back down into the deep bunker.

Hole 12: Well-designed layout. Long from the back tees, but a well struck 5-wood will place you very close to the pin. The area of to the left of the green is also nicely done and slopes toward the putting surface.

Hole 13: Well done around the lake. I also noticed another detail in the addition of an upright wooded 150 marker.

Hole 14: We finally get that elevation change that I knew would come. From the tee to the green there is a 51' drop and we are offered a dramatic view of the hole. With the drop, a drive is able to get around 23' of the green.

Hole 18: This is a very nice finisher. The light reflecting off the water appears to shine off of the brick wall bordering it and offers a sensational effect.

Good Points: Nice layout, good rockwork, and well done around water.

What Needs Work: I would definitely address the sharp and rough edges as well as working on making the elevation flow, especially in the fairways.

Favorite Hole: Toss up between 12 and 18.

Final Thoughts: Chuck has done a good job on his last two efforts and I enjoy playing his courses very much. I would recommend this course to those with slow downloads especially, as it makes a good addition. I look forward to Chuck's future endeavours and once he works out the edges, I believe he will be one to reckon with.
