LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is the third course designed by Shane Robert. The other two designs include Guru's Lair and El Canterro GC. I have not played the previous courses so I will only comment at the one in question here.

This is a fictional parkland course set somewhere near a mountain range. The best way to describe this course is VERY LONG. Only one set of tees have been used here and they measure at 8357 yards. All of the par 5s average 670 yards in length and are not reachable in two shots. A few of the par fours ar as long as an average par 5. The par fours averaged well over 500 yards as well. Three are not reachable in regulation and almost make it a guaranteed bogie. The layout is quite well designed but the overall length makes it very unrealistic. There are many large bunkers here and water hazards are numerous as well. The course does offer an unlimited amount of difficult shots and the general play of the course is difficult.

The trees are very heavily populated in many areas, but seem repetitive it many areas. No underplanting was done here. The bunkers were very well shaped but no attempt was made to add depth. Same with the water hazards...they had nice form, but no lips were noted and the course did not gradually slope towards the water. The course is generally flat at that looked a little strange seeing how a mountainous panorama was used. Several holes had doughnut shaped bunkers surrounding the greens and a few of the fairways were actually islands set inside of large lakes. At least bridges were used in most areas to get from one area to another. Nice planted flowers were at most tee locations to add a little color to the terrain. The cart paths were well designed, but caused some dark shadows when elevation was accomplished.

Many of the shapes here were very well crafted and well thought out, but it looked as if the designer got tired of the work on the 18th hole. The last hole had a stock tee box, Stock fairway, stock green, and no bunkers. Looked as if he just wanted to get done. This is quite common among early designs. This being one of two designs release at the same time made me think he rushed the final product.

Custom amenities: Bridges, buildings, and planted flowers looked decent, but I could not get over the monstrous length of this course. What a Bear!

Greens: They tended to be slightly elevated in most areas and caused dark shadows and did not look naturally placed. The were pretty flat and easy to putt on with the exception to the occasional bump that made for an easy 3 putt.

Fairways: Pretty well designed, but offered no second cut of rough. Several were surrounded by water making it a tough shot to land on safely. On many cases you were forced to layup on a already extremely long course.

Tee Boxes: They were mostly stock shaped, but were level and nice bright flowers added to the color.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: Nicely shaped and look quite original. They tended to be bumpy and lacked any depth. Much more work was needed here.

Planting: Overall the planting was pretty good. With the exception of that one tree that was used way too much on every hole. Some under planting would have been a huge addition.

Best Hole: Several to chose from here; I would say the Par 4, 398 yards, #13 hole was my favorite. The tee shot looked over a small pond; while the approach shot to the green was guarded on both sides by water. No bunkers were placed near the green. One of the few par 4s that you had a good chance to make the green and make birdie.

Overall: I decent fictional design that used its massive length as its best hazard. The challenge here was quite good. Due to its length I am afraid PS players will shy away from this design. I slightly suggest this course for download.
