LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon

July 2001

This is a real course situated in the USA, built in 1925 it has been host to the US Open, most recently in 1990. I would describe the course as a woodland with tight looking undulating fairways, lakes on holes 2/13/14 and 17 and plenty of sand traps.

John has been designing this since February and is obviously a labour of love, which oozes out from the course as you play it.

There are wonderful textures, large sweeping tees, custom objects, and a famous clubhouse, brilliantly captured here, that was based on the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and also from the holy Muslim city of Medina.

The course is beautiful to look at and with the variety of trees that line both sides of the fairway and that give the illusion that the fairways are narrower than they really are, you could be mistaken at times for thinking you were playing a top woodland course in the UK.

The trees, as I have already said have been placed with sympathy and the greens really are a match for any at Augusta, this is one tough course once on the greens, there are some wicked slopes and you have to have your wits about you at all times, it never gets silly but is always challenging.

The bunkers are brilliantly done, some of the best I have seen and a credit to John, some of them are massive but they always look in perspective and are finished off with much skill.

This is not an easy course to score low on, the greens, undulations of the fairway, trees and bunkers make sure you have to plan your round or pay the consequences, the courses beauty is also its hazards.

Best Hole: The par 3's are all lovely to look at, I also loved the long par 5 10th which was a beaut with some magnificent bunkers and of course the 18th with its marvelous clubhouse and wonderful planting near the tee, in fact it is so difficult I can't make my mind up.

Overall: I have really enjoyed playing this course and the greatest compliment I can give it is that it feels like a real course at all times and 18 holes go by in no time whatsoever.

There are no visible flaws here that I could see and I would say that although maybe not as outstandingly beautiful as say Augusta it was an equally enjoyable place to play and in some ways better.

You owe it to yourselves to download this course, a fantastic recreation and very, very playable.

This review will be based on playability, aesthetics and originality. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion following my play-testing of the completed course.

I fully understand the hard work and immense skill that is involved in the designing of these courses and my comments will try to be constructive and without bias.
