LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
August 2001
2nd hole, par 3, 194y, this hole has a very small green with a rear bunker. Take care with your tee shot. I used a 4 iron and that was safe and it put me close to the cup.
7th hole, par 4, 345y, I found a 2 iron draw took me 21y to the right of the green.a chip.a putt.a birdie.
9th hole, par 4, 368y, with a tree in the center of the fairway at the initial landing point, I found it to my advantage to land to the left of the tree. That left an approach shot of approximately 100y.another birdie.
10th hole, par 3, 195y, the warning on the hole preview about the heavily sloped green was eliminated by using a 4 iron, short.best shot so far.
11th hole, par 4, 303y, I again used the advice in the hole preview and used a 3w to the green, result.an eagle.
13th hole, par 3, 176y, on this hole I chose to override the caddies advice and go with a 6 iron long, an excellent choice. Try it, you'll like the result.
18th hole, par 4, 403y, when you are ready to take your approach shot to the green, if the caddie gives you a 9 iron and you think it should be a pw, use the 9 iron. This green has a steep frontal slope.
The putting seemed to be very easy and the birdies plentiful, mainly because the holes were on the short side and the second shot was an easy one to the pin. This set you up for a short putt on an easy green.
The elevations were excellent and so was the caddie. When I decided to make changes in the trajectory I didn't use the caddie.
Since this is a sim of an 'R' course, the designer doesn't have any leeway as to where or how many hazards there are.
Both the fairways and the greens are not very well guarded at all. It's a rather bland course as far as challenges go.
His choice of trees and the variety that he used turned out to be an attractive blend for this small download.
Being a 'real' course the lack of color wasn't his choice.
To this untrained eye the course seemed to be beautifully made. Everything flowed together to make for a rather interesting round of golf. The pano he used gives you a relaxed feeling. Playing a short course such as this is very refreshing. If you want a quick game on a well done course, try this.
Because of its many merits , it is my feeling that a course such as this belongs on your hard drive. I hope you find this true after your first round.

Concept 6/10 An average English club course, Wexham Park has an open, inviting feel.
While hole length is short, and the course is only a Par 68, there is some
impressive design and the 6th and 7th in particular are little masterpieces.
Where else could you find a Par 4 measuring under 250 yards and almost
impossible to drive? In truth, it's a course that's hard to take seriously and
might play best in a Bango competition or similar. I'm sure Wexham Park
is a daunting concept in real life, but it's a gentle little course on Links and
ideal for passing a half hour without expending too much effort. |
Appearance 5/10 With sparse planting and little elevations, Wexham Park naturally is not a visually stunning course. There's been a little craft applied to
certain areas, such as the ponds and intimidating wire fence and to be honest the course does not look unattractive. But in today's
demanding Links society, are its stock textures and occasional clones acceptable? My money says yes, and it's worth a go, but don't
expect visual fireworks. |
Playability 7/10 For a course that promises little, this is a good round of golf. There is subtle and carefully-managed risk/reward on many holes and the
styles are mixed up well. For reasons that I cannot pinpoint, Westfields is one of those courses that radiates authenticity and welcome:
a round here is never cold and impersonal. Perhaps, on occasions, the fairway-to-green play becomes monotonous. But then the tee
shots are well contrived and hitting the fairways in the first place is no guarantee. |
Challenge 3/10 As might have been expected from a course with no real gradient test, and a lack of difficult greens or hazards, this doesn't play hard.
With the average approach shot being something under 80 yards, birdies are expected and only the frequent water hazards keep
scores from plummeting. As with a lot of real life course conversions, what might be challenging for the real golfer is a walkover to
those with a mouse in their hand. |
Technical 7/10 It's not cutting edge, but nor is there anything that players are likely to find out-of-place or ridiculous. The little elevation work there is
has been extremely well done, and the planting is sound. Perhaps the textures take something to be desired, but the course feels real,
which is a big plus for the designer. |
Overall |
An undemanding little club course: often fun, rarely challenging. |
