LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chris Gormley

July 2001

Initial Impressions: Sandpiper looks like a pretty straightforward course with no gimmicks or anything to trick it up. Planting seems to be pretty sparse, but this may be because it is an actual real life course, since I am not familiar with the real course I will not dwell much on this here. Pano tends to be distracting, maybe because I see so much of it compared to other courses. This is probably due to the lack of planting. Not much risk/reward factor on this course, a grip and rip style that I am seeing a lot of lately.

Greens: The greens are very large and take away any sense of the risk/reward factor that a golf course should have. Most greens were shaped well and had nice contours to make putting interesting. There was a couple though that were very difficult under the Firm/Fast conditions that I played under. Green #3 would be an example of this. Some greens need a little more tweaking to get rid of those unwanted shadows as well as a few sharp edges. Mostly pretty well done though.

Fairways: The fairways are very large and roomy. Almost to large for No Wind conditions as a player never really has to worry about leaving the fairway unless you completely miss the snap. There were quite a few places where a little more care should have been taken to clean up the fairways. Rough edges and ripples in the terrain are distracting to play with. Granted these do not give the fairways the appearance of the ocean during a hurricane, but they need some extra care to make them perfect. #7 looks almost like it was rushed and that is why the ripples and rough edges are there.

Tee Boxes: All were large and clear from obstructions for the drives. There are 3 tees for variety.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: Bunkers and the water hazards were done pretty well. Although none really come into play on this course, they serve more as dressing for the course.

Planting: There is very little planting on this course besides the trees that line each hole. Being a real course this may be the case but I would have liked to see some other types of vegetation like grass or something in the water ways just to add a little life to the course so that it does not seem so plain. The tree in the 14th fairway is different. I don't remember seeing to many courses that have a tree in the middle of the fairway. Only mentioned it here as I hit the darn thing twice J

Fairness: Ok for all swing types. The course is so roomy that even under Windy conditions a player really does not have to worry about leaving the fairways. A couple of greens would get tough under the Firm/Fast conditions but I expect every golf course to have some of these tougher greens.

Best Hole: None of the holes stuck out as the best but the 15th was a pretty fun hole to play.

Overall: Sandpiper is a course that has a lot of potential. Many finishing touches need to be done to raise the score of this course to where it could be, if more planting were done and a little trimming of the size of the fairways and greens this course could be very fun to play. These things mentioned above will make the player have to think more to get through the course with a good score and thus would make the course better.

When I review a course I do so as a player and as a Tour Coordinator. I look at things like playability, aesthetics, design, originality and construction. Since I have not created a course with the APCD I am not an expert on the in's and out's of the program, but do understand the amount of work that goes into a course. I will try to make any comments helpful to the designer from a players stand point and not from a designers standpoint.

Tested using Classic Swing with Pro Ability from the back tees. Played twice using the standard stroke mop with No Wind, Moderate, Medium and Windy, Firm, Fast conditions as well as numerous walkthroughs in practice mode
