LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
July 2001
5th, par 5, the bunker placement; many designers could learn good placement in back of green to make for difficult pin shot.
6th, par 4, well shaped green with fairway pot hole bunkers shaped and placed very well,
10th, par 4, elevation to hole seemed off, or was it the continuous sounds of jet aircraft, geese and frogs distracting me.
15th, par 3, 5 iron, 1 click up in trajectory (in setup) makes for perfect shot.
16th, par 5, from the top view ( above screen shot ) a fascinating looking hole with rock treatments around one large water hazard very cleverly broken up to give the look and feel of three separate hazards. With a long bunkered fairway leading into a final approach to a well placed pin that is 594y from tee to green, caps off this hole and makes for interesting golf.
A second shot over the well placed water hazard makes for a very possible but risky and rewarding shot. As you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed this hole.
17th, par 3, this island green takes some thought because of rear pin placement, distance, and a sloped green, making it very easy to overshoot.
18th par 4, 486 yards to an extremely well guarded green, A very enjoyable view of his rock treatments around the water hazard can be had from the tee. Don't underestimate the frontal slope of the green, it's treacherous, If you are a little short you will end up back in the bunker.
A stately old clubhouse graces this final hole along with what you would expect from a download of this size, stand, signs, T.V. towers tents. Just like the big time.
Continually check out the rear views. They are spectacular, especially from the green.
The roughs have a good deep color but the tees, greens, and fairways are a little pale for me, and don't seem to blend too well. The types of trees picked for certain places and overall planting are excellent with a good use of color to make it pleasing to the eye. Well placed rocks of differing sizes make for a pleasant overall appearance to this course. The treatments around the water are a nice finishing touch.
Fair sized fairways and well placed bunkers on both fairways and greens present an interesting challenge.
Views from the tees and from the top view give a pleasant open feeling to the course.
Putting is more toward easy than moderate, and it definitely is a driver's paradise.
A thoroughly enjoyable round of golf makes me want to recommend the course to the 56k's among us. They do, after all, make up the overwhelming majority of players. Play this course under varying conditions and it will seem like a different course every time.

Description Fictional, woodland course |
Location TBA |
Conditions TBA |
Concept 7/10 Easily the most coherent of the designer's fictional courses, Stoney
Run is an authentic, if slightly derivative championship-style course.
Reminiscent of Pinehurst and Sawgrass by turns, the designer's
ambition is matched with a finely trimmed - even manicured - layout
that plays home to convincingly styled holes. The likes of the waste
areas and path network are all solid convincers: oddly, though, it
doesn't quite all click if you are playing with a big, post-Mod hitter. |
Appearance 7/10 The textures are of a very high order and don't tile or clash to a noticeable extent. Planting, too, has been shaken up and customised
and is most convincing: the splashes of colour being welcome distraction without screaming to be noticed. Although the edges of the
hazards have had attention granted them, they do look significantly older than the course as a whole. |
Playability 9/10 It would be fair to say that the course holds a lot of appeal. Shot options are granted on many holes, and there is a subtle strategy to
playing the course well rather than a sequence of do-or-die challenges. The course's general demeanour holds up well, despite the
lack of any ambient sound. |
Challenge 5/10 The main problem is with the Mod. Not only does it allow the player to circumvent some of the course's hazards, it shows up how those
elevations were placed to foul the player in the first place. Even disregarding the hazard placement, a course like this really requires
tougher rough to be a reasonably testing opponent. |
Technical 7/10 Even today, Ed Balaun's work would receive credit for its imagination and attention to detail. Perhaps it's fair, then, to credit New
Stoney Run with a high mark. It's missing some of the modern niceties, but the overall work is of a high order for its time. |
Overall |
A cute and coherent creation, standing clear of the designer's other fantasy courses
in terms of sheer realism. |
35/50 |
