LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon

July 2001

I remember when Chuck was in the process of doing this course and he wanted a name for this Australian Outback style course set among Eucalyptus Groves, if there is such a thing, and this is the name he has come up with for his fictional design.

Unlike Stuart Kahle who is an Aussie, Chuck is an American so it will be interesting to see how the 'Foreigner' copes with an Aussie course compared to a local who has had his own design, Heritage out as well.

Custom textures have been used and the mix of styles from the eucalyptus groves through to the dry grass around the bunkers, which I like to the rough etc complement well, I did notice from the first tee some loose trees that had edged onto the tee and fairway which I guess shouldn't be there.

There are also creeks and small lake areas wind through the course, this has been neatly finished off with good use of planting, other areas of planting are also fairly well done, there are a lot of tall thin trees lining the holes, not ones you normally see on a golf course.

For me the course was a refreshing change, however there were just some minor points that could have been tidied up or extras that would have made things even better. I thought a little more could have been done with the planting, I realise not much would live in such conditions, but if Chuck has a look at a course like the Scorpion he may see that improvements could be made as well as some planting around the base of some of the trees to soften it and make it look more comfortable. I also think that he has got to about 80% competent with the APCD, although the course is well planned and ideas excellent, things such as the bunkers etc there were still some pulls noticeable from the overhead views by some of the greens and the flow was just a little lacking in places such as around bunkers and where textures met, this didn't really detract from my enjoyment as a player but I hope is good feedback to Chuck or any other designers who play the course.

The greens themselves were excellent, nice elevation changes, nothing extreme but well done and realistically tough, in fact the course layout, placement of hazards was very good indeed, good shots would not be penalised but a slightly miss hit shot may or may not stay out of trouble, just how it should be in real life.

There is also part of the Mesa Roja canyon used here and in the main fitted in reasonably well, there is also some originality, you only have to look at the 7th with its tall sandstone walls to your right but the technical glitches do detract from it which is a pity and you have the waterfall at the back of the 10th which is spoilt by the careless planting of flowers which don't sit right.

Best Hole: I like the very long par 5 14th because it does give you a chance to cut over the trees and the creek to reach the green in 2 or lay up and lob on for 3 onto an elevated green, it is also a well laid out and nice looking hole, in fact 14 to 18 were my favourite holes.

Overall: I would say a very good and playable first effort from Chuck, an excellent layout and lovely greens and ideas throughout. I would say though that because he is not 100% adept with his skills the rough edges do mar the design and I am sure he will look back on the course once he has released a couple more and see exactly what I mean, if he can't already. I think when he is more skilled then he should come back to this an re do it, more planting, smooth it all down and get rid of the errors and this will be an absolute belter, it is still a good download as it stands and I heartily recommend it.

This review will be based on playability, aesthetics and originality. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion following my play-testing of the completed course.

I fully understand the hard work and immense skill that is involved in the designing of these courses and my comments will try to be constructive and without bias.
