LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Pete Dixon
July 2001
I had the honour of reviewing the original version of this course a while back and at that time I stated that this was one of the best small downloads about and that with a bit of tweaking could become exceptional if re worked and improved.
Well, low and behold, here is the re worked design, the question is has the tweaking made it exceptional? The answer, in my opinion is that although it is definitely improved it is not as good as I had hoped for, it isn't bad, far from it, and it just seems to have been a bit of a wasted opportunity. How did I come to these conclusions? Read on and I will tell all.
As in the original, it is a mountain course, now with a custom panorama and not Whistlers. It is still a devilishly difficult course to score well on and the risk/reward factor, tough greens, even tougher lies off the fairway are all still there, add to this bunkers that are now really well done, the abundance of water is still in evidence, custom textures now come into play on the greens, fairways, rough etc, everything I had hoped for, so why isn't it the classic it sounds like it should be?
For me the course has been spoiled by some untidy and what I consider to be inappropriate choice of planting and use of some objects. There are quite a lot of white and pink blossom trees in evidence which to me don't fit in to the surroundings, they are too garish in this setting and put me off, water hazards have again been left and I felt a little bit of planting complementing their placement would have improved things as would some more varieties of planting around the greens for example would have helped too.
Scale of some objects was also a problem; the benches located at some of the tees appear too big for the scale and detract from the overall view.
I feel I am sounding too negative here, well I don't mean to be, this course has improved considerably and with the exception of the points above looks magnificent.
The custom textures work well and the panorama really does add a new dimension, the course is a dream for clickers as it gives a mega challenge and also for powerstrokers who must fine it one hell of a challenge!
Best Hole: Still the mega tough but beautiful par 5 9th, the view from the tee describes the beauty and just take my word, this is one tough hole!
Overall: A course that could have been Augusta in the Mountains but has been spoiled only slightly by what, in my opinion, is a wrong choice of foliage used with the blossom trees and some clumsy scaling.
Other than that the course is very very good, the backdrop is jaw dropping and the holes are one of the toughest challenges to be found on any other APCD course without being ridiculous.
This is still a small download and even if you have the first one you have to have this in your collection, get it now!

This review will be based on playability, aesthetics and originality. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion following my play-testing of the completed course.
I fully understand the hard work and immense skill that is involved in the designing of these courses and my comments will try to be constructive and without bias.
