LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Course History:

Yarra Yarra's history goes back to 1898 when the club was known as Eaglemont, a nine-hole course situated at Heidelberg. In 1911 the club moved to a new site on the clay soil at Rosanna and took the name Yarra Yarra. 1928 saw another move this time to its present site of 49 hectares on the renowned sand belt of Melbourne, home of some of Australia's finest golf courses. The course is a challenging 18 hole par 72, consisting of undulating couch fairways bordered by long established native trees, large contoured greens and strategically placed bunkers. Many successful tournaments have been staged here including the last six Women's Australian Opens. The course has been walked by some of the world's greatest players. The course is an ideal sanctuary for an abundant variety of bird life, which adds to the charm of Yarra Yarra. Yarra Yarra also has an excellent and proud history in pennant golf and has produced a number of fine golfers.

First Impressions:

This is a remake of a previous release by the same name. The course has been cleaned up and looks much better this time around. This is a very open course with nicely formed bunkers, and as you would expect there aren't any water hazards in play. The planting here is fairly sparse without very much in the way of under planting. The textures used are worth noting; they give the course a nice smooth look. Nearly all of the trees and bushes are custom objects and also done for the course were the houses, vehicles, and custom signs for each hole on the tee boxes.

Strategy:

The course is fairly easy off the tee boxes with no requirement to fade or draw your tee shot. The landing areas are a good width and occasionally guarded by well placed bunkers but you should be able to drive past them without any trouble. The pin positions can be very difficult forcing you to risk the hazards if you want to get the ball close to the pin. All of the par 5's are reachable. The greens are fairly easy and putting here shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to score very well here.

Favorite Hole:

Hole #1. A very pretty par 3 to start off with. You'll notice the course name in the grass, which is a nice effect.

Overall:

The custom objects were very well done and this takes a lot of time and effort to do. Very well done course and I can definitely recommend that you download and play it.

This review will be based on playability, aesthetics and originality. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion following my play-testing of the completed course.

I fully understand the hard work and immense skill that is involved in the designing of these courses and my comments will try to be constructive and without bias.

Concept  4/10
The genre of sprawling, flat courses just adopted another candidate. It's true that Yarra Yarra isn't exactly standout, but it's homely enough for all that. There's been care taken with the Links conversion, with some customisation thrown in, in order to provide a distinctive look, but nothing can disguise the very ordinary hole design and the fact that most holes don't present anything more than a very straightforward objective and challenge.
Appearance  3/10
Yarra Yarra very much suffers from the endlessly repeating rough textures that have so often dragged down courses of this type. The texture colour choices are unusual, to be polite. There's a decent effort made with the planting, although it does come across as more than a little random and disorganised. Even the course buildings and the sports cars in the car park can't disguise the fact that there isn't really very much to see.
Playability  5/10
Amiable golf, to be sure. The hole design is no great shakes, but there is a little variation and the course presents a reasonable set of challenges without becoming too repetitive. It's easy to dash off a round in short order, and it wouldn't be difficult to go back for another. It's doubtful whether there's too much long-term appeal, though.
Challenge  1/10
There's precious little to stand in your way. No fairway hazards, no deep rough and very little in the way of elevational change. The greenside bunkers universally provide a reasonable escape. The greens are pleasingly moderate and those birdie and eagle putts will just slip in. Expect to score low - very, very low indeed.
Technical  4/10
Reasonable work, as would be expected from the designer. His courses are oldies - and unashamedly showing their age - but goodies, on the whole, and Yarra Yarra has maintained an indefinable appeal many years later. It wouldn't take too much work to give this a modern updating, and that is tribute to the original work.
Overall Not particularly outstanding, but far from decrepit. Yarra Yarra is not too different to a host of other courses, but perfectly playable for all that. 17/50
