LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Surprising as it is, this small course file is actually a full blown course set amongst a woodland and mountain backdrop. There are some tough holes within this course making for accuracy off the tee a necessity. The first hole is a tough drive, with water to the left and a large bunker to the right. This par 5 will either set you up for a good round or a recovering round.

There are many holes that require a little thought, and the elevations have to be carefully thought out with the draws and fades that are possible. There are another par 5's that are very similar during the course, with a large bunker awaiting a drive too far. Neither of these will allow a good score without some wind and luck.

There are enough things in this course to make it worth playing twice, but there are pointers that should be made to learn from when designing too. The bunkers have depth but no lip. More extrusion on these shapes could make them a lot better. Water also suffers in this design flaw too. But one big flaw I am seeing more and more is the plot edges. Some courses have flat areas around the edge of their plots, and this causes a few visual problems with the panoramic view.

The other areas that needed looking at through Turkey Run were the 2nd fairway bunker on the 1st hole where some terrain bleeds. The edges of some fairways are sharp and fall away too steeply from the edge. There are other small details that could do with touching up, but it doesn't mainly interfere with the play too much.

Designers Note:

I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.

Mick Prendergast is the designer of Turkey Run. Mick also designed Whiner Hills & Sleepy Hollow. Turkey Run is a mountain course with trees, sand traps and water. Turkey Run was a difficult challenge and I enjoyed my round there.

Visuals: This is an average design visually. There are a few rough edges but overall I it looked OK.

Off the Tee: Your tee shots at Turkey Run will test you in many different ways. There are narrow fairways on a few holes that will make accuracy important. There is either water or sand in most of the landing areas off the tee as well. There are some dogleg holes that will require you to lay-up or take a chance using a draw or fade to advance your drive farther up the fairway. Mick also uses sand and water in the fairway on a few holes that will also force you to lay-up off the tee.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Turkey Run are a mixed bag. If you drive finds the fairway, you will have slope to negotiate on a few holes namely #1, #3 and #15. There are tough pin placements on holes #2, #6, #14 and #17.

Putting: Putting is also a mixed bag at Turkey Run. There is some break on every green but you will have to negotiate severe break on holes #7, #9 and #11. There are some moderate break on other holes that will test you as well.

Another good one from Mick. Good Luck on your next course.
