LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by James Woods

First Impressions:
When you 'walk' to the 1st tee box to begin playing at Avocet your eyes immediately grow a little wider than normal. The beauty of the scenery immediately strikes you and you are anticipating playing this course. Recreated for Links by Art Patscheck the actual course is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Custom textures are what make this course come alive. The green color of the fairways, rough, tees, fringes, and greens all work together very well. Also done well are the custom tee markers and flags. Cart paths run the length of the course and are also done very well along with their accompanying bridges. The occasional camera or tower also appears along your golfing outing. The planting on the course follows the color scheme very well although under planting under the forested areas is sparse since the variety here is very limited. This really does not detract from the course. The bunkers here are well done although in the time since Mr. Patscheck started the course the bar on these has been raised and these bunkers do not come up to those higher standards. These bunkers may look exactly like the ones found on the actual course but I have no prior knowledge of the actual layout. Water on the other hand is below standard. The water is flat and reflective but it hasn't been extruded and there is no lip.

Strategy:
The strategy can be summed up in one word: putting. Hit the ball close and you'll have a good chance at a birdie. Hit the ball far from the hole and you'll be fortunate to salvage a par. 3 putt holes are a distinct possibility even from short distances. The fairways are generous and the obstacles should not present any problems. The entire course is laid out directly in front of you. The greens are very contoured and severely sloped on some holes. The par 5's on the front 9 are unreachable. The par 5's on the back are reachable and provide the only eagle opportunities provided you can get the ball close with a 3-wood.

Favorite Hole:
Par 3- 8th 182 yards uphill. Beautiful tee shot here with sand and grass bunkers guarding the green.

Overall:
Excellent effort and should be in everyone's course library as a permanent addition.

Lacy Gearheart's thoughts...
A very well designed course that gives you the feeling you are actually there. The custom textures give it a dark look and make it very easy to locate your ball. A very challenging course to putt on makes you want to be close on your approach shot. No flaws noted

Pete Dixon's thoughts...
It is hard to believe that this became available in February this year, so much has happened since then and so many great courses have been released and this is still one of them.

A real course from the Myrtle Beach area in America and one of the first courses to use custom textures instead of the stock ones available with the APCD.
The textures used are quite a vivid green but do suit the course, they are good, but not as good as the ones used on his updated version of Arrowhead, which are quite sublime.

The standard is what one would expect from an Art design, well crafted and extremely playable and good looking. There are the odd glitch where some areas around bunkers are not 100% smooth and the same can be said for the flow of the fairways where the cut strip and rough meet, but this is most definitely an exception rather than the rule and the finish to the water's edge was also not as good as it could have been.
Greens are fairly tough here so you have to be accurate with your approach or risk at least 2 putting, don't expect many single putts here.
Overall: Another nice design from Art and one worthy of being in your collection. You can tell he has improved as he has progressed with latter releases and I would doubtless have scored this higher when it was first released but it is up against stiff opposition now and the flaws are more noticeable as the APCD is continually pushed and updated.
