LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by James Wood

Course History:

Located in The Woodlands, Texas 27 miles north of Houston, this straightforward course has eighty-foot tall pines and several lakes that pinch many holes. The greens are small and fast, and water hazards come into play on six holes. The signature hole is #13, a 533-yard, par 5, requiring an approach shot to an island green. This course is the home for PGA touring professionals Jeff Maggert, John Mahaffey and Brian Claar. "GOLF Magazine" rated this course 90th best under the 1996 category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." This outstanding public course is the home of the PGA Tour's Shell Houston Open. This course is a part of the four-course complex at The Woodlands Resort and Country Club.

First Impressions:

Recreated for Links by Alan Price. The fairway texture, Bermuda rough, tees, fringes, and greens all work together very well. There is no 1st cut of rough. Also done well are the custom tee markers, hole signs, and flags. Cart paths run the length of the course and are also done very well along with their accompanying bridges. There are many residential houses evident as you play the course. The planting on the course follows the color scheme very well although under planting under the forested areas has not been done. The bunkers here are well done with a 2nd extrusion and a layer of dirt applied. The water is flat and reflective and it has a nicely formed lip but no 2nd extrusion.

Strategy:

The course is fairly easy off the tee boxes with no requirement to fade or draw your tee shot. The landing areas are narrow and occasionally guarded by well placed bunkers. The difficulty in playing this course is always your 2nd shot. Water and bunkers guard many of the greens. The pin positions can be very difficult forcing you to risk the hazards if you want to get the ball close to the pin. Three of the par 5's are reachable although the par 5 13th is an island green and it is probably advisable to lay up here and not risk hitting a 3-wood into the surrounding water. The greens are contoured and putting here is moderate to difficult.

Favourite Hole:

Par 4 17th. Beautiful second shot here into a very difficult pin tucked into the upper right corner of the green.

Overall:

Excellent effort and should be in everyone's course library as a permanent addition.
