LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is Monte Scholl's third design uploaded to the Links Corner. I have neither played nor seen his other two designs so I can not confirm nor deny any improvement with each course. This course is set on a mountain range utilizing The Whistler Panorama. The course plays a decent length of 7013 yards from the back tees and can be somewhat of a challenge. Many of the fairways are of stock form and tend to dogleg very often at 90 degree increments. Not realistic in my opinion. The designer has utilized many of the stock textures for his creation and does a decent job of plotting his layout. But I tend to believe that many designers cut too much off of the plot to save file size. That may be nice to some, but tends to really show many bad bald areas of the Panorama used. This is the case on hole #5. Many of the holes play extremely uphill or downhill and will cause uneven lies while playing the course. This will make the player consider club selection. Several areas showed dark shadows due to pulled verts and the areas where textures meet are not that smooth.

The bunkers and water hazards have miniature lips but are not extruded enough for a realistic look. This area could always be improved. The planting is pretty good and a good variety of plants were used. I would have liked to seen more ground level shrubs to add to the realism, but the designer chose not to. He did use a good rocky texture for the cartpaths and it looked quite good, but in some areas they became slightly twisted and looked kind of funny. Several additions like wood fences, rock walls, and waste bins were added to spruce up the design and that can never hurt. They also seemed to be in the best positions for that natural look. Overall this was not a bad job, but could use more work. The biggest downfall was that many of the shapes created were of stock nature and detracted greatly from its chance of being original. No second cut of rough was seen...this would have greatly added to the design. I was not a believer at first...but I am now.

Custom amenities: Rock walls, wood fences, ballwashers, planted flowers, and waste bins were seen often and did add a little to the design. The course had one or two small buildings, but Monte did not really go too in-depth into 2d objects other than trees.

Greens: Usually stock in shape; these greens had decent slope to them making it a fun putting round.

Fairways: Usually of the stock variety...many were extreme doglegs and did not look natural. Extreme elevation changes made them difficult. But they were generally wide and made for good scoring.

Tee Boxes: Stock shapes were used and no trim texture was used to highlight them. That could have helped immensely. But they were level and that is something to see as a positive.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: They were the same stock shapes and were placed at the precise area that the APCD would normally put them. This was the biggest downfall of the design. No originality. They were also slightly lowered but looked basically flat.

Planting: Overall the planting was good, but more trees could have been used on hole #5 to help hide the Panorama. More low level grasses and bushes might have added realism to the design.

Best Hole: Many of the holes were similar but I chose the the #11 hole, par 4, 400 yards. It was a dogleg left with a nice rock wall at the tee boxes. A small stream crossed in front of you and trailed down the left side of the fairway. A fairway bunker was placed about 260 yards from the tees and there were 3 bunkers that circled the green. A very nicely laid out hole and the best of the course.

Overall: A decent mountain/woodland course utilizing all stock shapes. The good planting kept you wanting to finish the round, but the few flaws detracted greatly from the overall experience. With original shapes this could have been alot better. A little more attention could be placed on the hazard areas as well.
