LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Pete Dixon
This is a revised version of this real course, unfortunately I never saw the original and won't be able to compare, but I have read IanD's review of it.
First impressions were not good of this woodland course that also has plenty of water. The course initially appears to be set in a housing estate, on the very first drive I hooked my ball into the houses on the right (I am a left- hander!), and found myself having to ask for my ball back and apologising for the broken window!!
For the first 4 holes I was really disappointed, the water seemed to lack definition, the bunkers were flat and lifeless, although the lips were not too bad, and objects such as bridges were not in scale or sitting right and the greens were nice and easy. Then all of a sudden you get to the 5th tee and the course changes before your eyes, to begin with you get away from all the houses, the fairways get tighter, the greens get so thin that a tightrope walker could practice on them and the putts need careful planning, I found myself go from a healthy - 4 to + 2 by the end of the round and I found I had a real test of golf on my hands, also objects such as bridges were now in scale and sat nicely in their surroundings and the overall look was far more pleasing to the eye.
There were still some problems, although the water sat down well with good defined edges I felt it would have looked a lot better if there had been some sympathetic planting done around these areas. The bunkers were still a little flat and texture less and there were was a lack of smoothness where the terrain met especially between the fairway, semi rough and rough and around the tees.
Best Hole: Without doubt the long par 5 9th with its narrow fairway that doglegs right with water and trees on your right and trees on your left, you have to aim your drive at the narrowest point on the fairway with trouble on all sides.
If you are lucky enough to be playing your second shot from the fairway you will either be able to play short of the green, or if the wind is behind you have a go in two, be advised there is water waiting for you on the left of the green and 3 bunkers waiting for you behind the green, which by the way is pencil thin!!
If you play short you will be left with a short chip with the same hazards as you would have if you went for it in two, only it looks worse as you are nearer and you can also see the tiered sloping green.
Great hole, would love to play it for real.
Overall: After the first 4 holes the course definitely picks up and there is then a pick of fine holes to test your skills to the limits, my favourites being the 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 13th and 17th.
Tee shots into narrow fairways coupled with long stretches of water or trees make accuracy paramount, particularly on your drive.
There are better courses out there, and considering this is an updated version it still falls behind some of the expertise that is now showing itself, but I don't see why Alan can't attain these heights with future designs.
If you were looking for a course to download and have the top selection then I would give this a run for its money, as there are some good holes to be found.
Links Corner Design Analysis
Previously reviewed and noted fault wise, this course has returned to us with some of the original faults still existing. It should be noted that some have been reworked, but nevertheless, some remain. These are basically the areas of the 1st cut bulging on some edges of the fairway, and some bunker faces requiring mesh attention. Typical examples are found on the 18th 1st cut before the first bunker. Others exist on holes 12 and 14. There are dark shadows now visible on areas that have been reworked. Bunker faces still exist requiring attention on the 1st hole back bunker, the 3rd and 11th holes too. There is also a hard edge before the greenside bunker on the first hole.
The course still is a pleasant one to play, but it could be said that after two attempts more may have been made of it.
