|So I went ahead and did an update of Augusta National. Yes, we have some great versions available but once I saw the differences in the DEM import I thought it was necessary to update this course.
The entire course is based on a 1 meter USGS DEM which was derived from a 2018 LIDAR survey. I sampled the DEM at 2 meters (6.56 ft) in QGIS and converted all elevations to feet for maximum 0.01 ft precision in the APCD. I used Google Earth images to lay out the texture lines. The only changes I made to the 2018 DEM was new tees for holes 11, 13, 15, and a longer 18 tee to reflect changes recently made to the course. The fairways are still based on the 2018 DEM.
Greens and Fringe
I did not alter the greens from the DEM import as they seem to be very accurate as is. I may revisit the course file and add in more verts along contours lines at a later date. This is likely controversial but it solved the issue of slow rolling fairways; the Fringe texture plays as a putting green. By doing this it was possible to recreate the roll-off areas around the green. The drawback of this is that the GIR stats for a round may not be accurate, but if chipping on the green is allowed the effect of this is minimal on game play if the ball does come to rest on the fringe.
I mapped all the flat areas of the DEM in QGIS for tee areas. This made some holes play a little longer than visible from Google Earth. The new tees for 11 and 15 were positioned with 2022 Google Earth images and 13 was a guess that seems to be accurate. The Back tees makes the course play to 7690 yards which is longer than it normally plays. I made Forward tees to play 7140 yards which should be appropriate with stock Links 2003 club distances. This involved making new, small tees on holes 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 (old tee), and 15. The Middle and Junior tees add more options for back tees. The Ladies tees are the members tees and plays 6285 yards.
This is the first course I planted fully from scratch. I had to fight a lot of APCD rendering crashes but the end result is better than I expected.
Crowds and 3D Work
There is only minimal 3D work completed for the course and no crowds or tournament objects. I will update the course file at a later date with more 3D work and maybe even a full tournament version.
