LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon

This course has been available to download for some time and has been getting some good reviews from Links players everywhere, so I can only apologise at the lateness of this review.

The Olympic Club is based on a real course in California, but I will not be able to judge it on its accuracy as I have never played it or walked it (but I am willing to, if ever invited, all expenses paid!!!).

The other courses Matt has designed are all fictional and include Rattle Snake and Voodoo Hills, neither of which, I am sorry to say, have I played.

What is very obvious from the beginning is that this is not going to be a push-over, the fairways are tight, the rough is ROUGH and the trees are denser than the middle of the Jungle in Borneo. The fairways slope severely in places making what you thought was a good drive or approach shot either end up in the rough or come back off the green towards you on the fairway!

The greens are tricky and downright nasty in places (hole 7 for one of many examples) and you need good skills to one or two putt.

This is not the most picturesque course out there but there are some nice touches around the tees. On the negative side the bunkers are a little flat looking and the edges are sharp and not well finished and the same could be said of the fairway edging. What you have to remember is that this course is a measly 10mb download and taking that into consideration you have to think what a course by this fellow is going to be like!

Best Hole: Any hole you can get a birdie on!!!, actually my favourite is the uphill par 3 - 8th with its totally unforgiving green.

Overall: Considering the small download and the not perfect bunkers, this course is for those of you who want a real golfing challenge; there are sloping tight fairways, the roughest rough, more trees than you can shake a stick at and greens that will make you weep.

Just try this in pro mode with windy conditions and fast hard greens and tell me if I am wrong.

Definitely one for tournaments and to keep on your hard drive.

Links Corner Design Analysis

Bunkers are the area within this course that may cause a few problems whilst playing. Simply put, they are extruded down approx 1ft, with hard edges. There is a missing texture on one face on the 2nd hole left side green bunker. The bunkers are fairly flat, but any play out of them will be impeded with the hard solid extruded faces. The fairways are surrounded with a border of rough followed by deep grass. On some holes where this terrain meets terrain, there are areas where the elevations on the textures don't meet well. The mesh needs a little more attention to avoid small valleys between joining textures. This is also more apparent where sand meets fairway, rough and deep grass on the odd holes too.

There are also sharp fall-aways on adjoining textures, on the 5th into the right green bunker this is visible and a few other holes show this too. On the 11th the fairway is sunken before the first green bunker causing some nasty shadows and pulled verts visible. With the mention of dark shadows, there are a few holes that show these in the top views too.
