LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is Tom Caplis's first design that I am aware of. It is a re-creation of a real course in a woodland setting. I am not familiar with the real course; so I wont comment on how accurate it is. I will only comment on the looks and playability of this design.

The layout looks very nice and seems as if it could be a real course. The forests are very thick and if you enter them with your shot....you will be hacking a long time. The areas are also well planted with many bushes to add color and to make the overall design feel very real. It is a moderately short 6893 yards from the back tees, but due to the doglegs and elevation changes...it plays much longer. Several of your shots require you to shape your shot in order to get the best approach to the greens. Be careful, due to the elevation changes...flat lies are not too common. There is not much water in this design except on a few holes. The holes that have water.....have plenty. The bunkers are smartly placed to affect many shots.

Planting on this course is very good with loads of undergrowth and vegetation lining the few streams and ponds. Rocks also assist in this area....and are a great addition to a very deep green course. The inclusion of the houses that are seen here are a great addition to a very good course. I have heard from many that this is the main feature that makes this look like the real course. The course is a decent challenge and should be very much liked by those that realish real course designs and power stroke players. Download is strongly suggested.

Custom amenities: Great houses all thru this design. Waste bins, ball washers, hazard stakes, and yardage markers added greatly.

Greens: They were well shaped and showed fair putting conditions. Nice gradual contouring made for a nice putting round

Fairways: They were well shaped and offered many elevation changes. No errors were seen here and the lack of a flat lie was often seen. No second cut of rough was used here due to a possibility that the real design has none. Good job

Tee Boxes: very nicely done and most of all flat. I believe one par 3 hole had a quaint rock trim around it. Why would that be the only hole?

Bunkers and Water Hazards: The ponds and streams were well shaped and also having very good depth. Plants, shrubs and rocks were added for a very realistic look. Bunkers were generally well done and all appeared to have a tiny lip. The rough did not appear to gradually flow towards them, it just looked to drop into the bunker without any transition. A little more work could have been done here. Overall very good.

Planting: Planting on this design was very good. Rocks, and bushes lined many watery areas, while the red and green bushes acted as underbrush for the wooded areas. Nicely done.

Best Hole: I had two favourite holes. Its a tie between the short 494 yard # 7 hole and the 411 yard # 4 hole. (#7) This short par 5 has plenty of sand and water and offers a lot of challenge. (#4) is a very nice uphill par 4 that is backed by many houses behind the green.

Overall: Although I can not vouch for it's accuracy....this course is very well done. It was enjoyable to play and no major flaws were noted. Both PS er's and clickers should find this challenging and a real treat. A very good course that ended up in my personal library of 30 courses.

CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg)

Description
Fictional, woodland course
Location
TBA
Conditions

Concept  3/10
The Legend is clumsy and uncomplicated, and it does take a struggle to get involved. While there is a basis for a good course in here, there is precious little atmosphere, and the holes feel oddly disparate. The long holes in particular are oddly devoid of charm, and the whole thing just leaves the impression of being glued together.
Appearance  3/10
Everywhere you look, there's something to trip the eyes. Despite occasional glimpses of a well-stitched panorama, there are poor extrusions, cloned planting, some odd shape-insertion and horribly tiling textures. Thankfully, with some grip on the fact that golfers like to see pretty landscapes, the designer has turned out a good view or two.
Playability  1/10
Route one golf here, and it takes a lot to engage with the course. There are precious few strategic options, virtually no placement skills required, and an almost continual lack of surprise. Each hole comes as more of a mild disappointment than a new challenge.
Challenge  4/10
The Legend, thankfully, does not completely rely on its blocky construction for challenge. For the most part, the green complexes are an effective and thought-provoking engagement, although some tend towards the Mod-unfriendly. It doesn't make up for the wideopenness of the course at large, though, and scores below seventy will be commonplace.
Technical  2/10
Just too much left to be done here. The overwhelming impression of the course is that of haphazard clumsiness and lack of polish. The panorama holds glimmerings of good graphical talent; it's a shame that this wasn't manifested elsewhere.
Overall Hardly legendary. A course that looks thrown together, and plays scarcely better. 13/50
