LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

A Real conversion isn't easy, but aside from not knowing the course I cannot make comparisons. Deciding whether to judge if the course met the criteria was then impossible to do, so I'd base this review on the design and playability of the Course rather than any conversion.

Being set upon dry grass, the appearance is a brightly laid out course. The chequered pin flags waving about appear to impress some of the depth the course may have. But some flaws are soon noted when any bunker is approached. The sharp and raised edges make some parts of the course unappealing. The concrete paths laid out look impassable due to the slopes induced. The 18th shows this clearly from the tee. Some green edges look too sharp making approach shots critical.

The Course though is playable, and of an average challenge. Some greens make for torrid putting with a lot of elevation. Although there are a few fairways causing concern, most are easily negotiated. The addition of fringes in later holes makes this course appear to be one created on a learning curve. The planting of the many trees could make for troublesome playing from, but also could have been improved with maybe darker terrain to make up for the absence in shadows (not a gripe of any sort, but perhaps a designer trick for visual improvement). The 17th and 18th holes feel rushed, making them the most un appealing visually, but again, they are playable and will give players a challenge to finish a good round.

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen

This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player.
Auburn Links at Mill Creek was a very nice first effort from Josh Lane. This is a real course design and thus cannot critique the design much since I have not seen the actual course.

Visuals:
This course looks fine. There were some odd-looking cart paths that I am sure no cart could stay on. Hole #18 is a good example. Also Josh used Dry Grass off the fairway but there was no rough. Again, I have not seen the course but a few feet of rough on each side of the fairway would have been a welcome addition. Some trees on a hill were leaning on Hole #12. Again, maybe that is the way it actually is on the course.

Off the Tee:
Auburn Links at Mill Creek has generous driving areas for the most part. Holes #1 and #18 are the exceptions to this. You must be careful on your drive to stay out of the water. Miss the fairway and you are in the Dry Grass but most of the trees are back from the edge of the fairway so they are not a problem.

The Approach:
Your approach shots into the greens at Auburn Links at Mill Creek are fairly easy but there are some deep bunkers waiting if you do not play a good shot. On some of these bunkers, the fairway/green will slope toward the bunker trying to suck your ball in.

Putting
Putting was very fair on Auburn Links at Mill Creek. There was a tremendous amount of break around the hole on #1 but otherwise most holes had small to medium break.

Auburn Links at Mill Creek is a good first effort from Josh and I hope he continues to design more courses in the future.
