LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Ian Downs
A mountain setting course, that visually looks and feels like a course should. The buttercups on adjacent fields shine in the sunlight making you feel like a morning round of golf is simply the best way of waking up.
Spring Valley has a lot of nice touches, and also has some hole layouts that challenge along the way. The fairways are not too difficult to hit, and the approach play can be easily maintained. For the most part you will be looking at the surroundings and how well everything appears. Flowers adorn many parts of the course, and the bridges over the winding stream are scattered here and there.
This isn't a hugely elevated course, but it has the usual flowing fairways that guarantee a tough lie here and there. If anything, some of the hardest parts of the course would be when approaching guarded greens. The bunkers, done well, have some sloping edges that may bring a stray shot rolling in. Go long on some holes and such plants as sunflowers may stand in your way to chipping back on.
The course did visually appeal with its first cut around the outer fringe of the fairway. The dormant grass surrounding the fairway, led to the first cut of rough, extruded slightly up to create a great close cut fairway. Unfortunately, on some holes, this may lead to problems and did on my initial playing. The 17th tee shot asks a carefully planned distance shot before the stream cuts through the fairway, and whilst my shot was positioned fairly well, it was in front a large extrusion of the first cut, and simply gave me no choice but to use a high lofted club. The 12th hole also showed signs of too much extrusion on the first cut. And whilst most holes only had the one cut, it did seem odd to find the 4th hole having 2 cuts, on the dormant grass. A few other points of note, were sharp edges around the outer edges of bunkers on the 3rd fairway bunker, and 16th green bunker.
Avoiding the edges of fairways though, this course will remain on many peoples hard drives for sure.
