LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by James Wood
First Impressions:
The Whistlers Mountain panorama was used here with the expected pine trees to go along with it. A lot of under planting in the form of bushes and other plants including flowers was also done. The bunkers are of the orange sand variety with a second extrusion done and some sort of dirt or topsoil used as a texture. The bunkers are large, deep, and have a nice shape. No first cut of rough in the fairways and the rough used here is actually deep grass. The water looks good with the expected planting and rocks around it. There are numerous rock formations done with textures.
Strategy:
There are a lot of hazards here. Many bunkers litter the golf course causing quite a few problems with tee shots and approach shots. The greens are large and very contoured with very difficult pin positions. The course plays very long measuring over 7600 yards from the back tees. Only one reachable par 5 from the back tees and the tee shot at this hole leaves you with a tough second over water to an island green and you'll probably have to hit a big hook to clear some trees at the landing area. Besides the island green at the par 5 17th there is also one at the par 3 4th hole. Some of the fairways are very narrow at the landing areas. It is also very unusual to get a flat lie in any of the fairways although you probably can play all of the holes straight away without having to shape the ball off of the tee boxes. Overall this is a difficult course to score well on.
Favorite Hole:
The par 4 18th hole takes you up through a ridge with a visible clubhouse in the background.
Overall:
There are a few bad edges here although they're not where you would expect them. They are apparent where the fairway and rough meet. They aren't really too bad and show up mostly in the top view. Many of the holes do not have a good look at the fairway off of the tee box. It is a good looking course and if you're up to a challenge then this course is certainly up to providing it to for you.
