LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Pete Dixon
Steve is one of the top designers out there in the APCD community and this fictional course came out quite quickly after his last Canyon Hills but this one hasn't been getting as much attention as some of the other big new releases of the last few weeks which is a pity as it is another top class effort from Steve.
Steve has managed to keep his ideas fresh and original with each release and this is no exception, as I said a fictitious wooded course with lots of water and huge strips of sand, I don't really know how best to describe it, the ideas these designers get!!
As with Canyon Hills the first hole is quite magnificent and sets the scene for the rest of the course that keeps you playing and makes you want to go around again after you have finished.
Planting is exceptional throughout and the bunkers are deep and finished off nicely and use the orange sand which is becoming a bit of a trademark in Steve's designs and contrasts nicely against the white sand that is found edging some of the water around the course, in fact on the 17th there are 26 small round bunkers to trap your ball.
The fairways are custom textures and have no cut marks; I prefer the no cut lines treatment, as it looks more authentic to me.
The water, and there is a lot of it, is bright and edged off superbly, reflections are good and the planting around it is also top drawer.
There are lots of different surface textures here; there are also areas of scrubland, which don't look dissimilar to the shell effect used on The Great White at Doral.
The depth around the course is also well handled through the rough, fairways and bunkers; there is nothing flat and 2 dimensional about this course.
Greens are fair and I would say on the easy side of medium and the tees are excellently done, raised and finished off smoothly giving good views of the holes.
The only fault I can really see is that sometimes on the horizon the water loses it's look and goes blocky, it doesn't happen very much but it is there on occasion.
Best Hole: There really are so many from the first through to the 18th, If I have to pick one it will be equal favorite with about 9 others it has to be the par 3 2nd, which speaks for itself, it is just gorgeous.
Overall: His courses just get better and better and Steve is without question one of the top 10 designers on the APCD. This is an original and beautiful course and worthy of any collection.
Can't wait for the next one.
