LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is Jason Conner's first course to be uploaded to the Links Corner. It is set somewhere in California amongst the flowing hills of that area. The course itself is exceptionally laid out and looks very natural. It plays a very long 7248 from the back tees and is quite challenging due to elevation changes and well placed bunkers and water hazards. Many of the holes play uphill or downhill and there are not many flat areas on the course.

Streams and ponds are found here to the level that many shots will be challenged by these hazards. Dirt patches, grasses and shrubs are common place and are found almost on every hole. Two of the fairways are split making for a tough decision off the tees (# 8 and #18).The Fairways are very narrow and a 3 wood is suggested for many tee shots. With the elevated teeboxes, many of the holes offer a very nice view. Several stock textures were used to give a variety of colors and they were well positioned for the course. Very smooth from start to finish, this course is a very good first design without many noticeable flaws. Many objects were placed such as waste bins, fences, posting signs, buildings, few bridges, and several tournament objects. A nice touch to a good round in California. Hole #15 was a very tough hole. The approach shot made you fly over water to a shallow green. the fairway in front of the green slopes back towards the water and 50% of your shots will land 5 feet from the hole and still roll back into the water. Good hole and was very challenging. Your better off going long and just chipping onto the green. One small thing I did not prefer was the yellow dry grass used as the outlining rough. I may be wrong, but it seemed to not match the panorama or the textures used on each hole. This was my only noted objection. Maybe it was used to simulate the golden fields in California. I dont live there so I could not properly judge that area. Well done!

Custom amenities: Several objects were nicely placed to add to the overall feel of the design. Nothing was too overstated to draw away from the natural look. The tournament objects may have slightly been to excess, but certainly will appeal to many players that choose to download this quaint course.

Greens: They were generally small in size but where well shaped and pretty fair to putt on. Due to their tiny size...scoring is difficult here and dont expect too many rounds of -10.

Fairways: Very narrow and had many undulations making a flat lie almost extinct. Well shaped and a fringe cut was added to simulate larger fairways than were really found. They had a natural flow to them and matched the surroundings quite well.

Tee Boxes: Elevated tees made for a very nice view on many holes. They were nicely worked and had the old style square look to them. A very nice touch.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: The bunkers here were very well shaped and had good depth to them. Many original shapes were used and lips were found on most of the bunkers. Water hazards were also well formed and a texture of dirt was added to highlight these areas. The Streams were relatively flat and did not seem to be extruded. I was not close enough to them to tell, but I may be wrong. Overall this area was very good.

Planting: Planting here was superb from the trees selected to the grasses and shrubs used to use around the water and bunkers. The only thing I noted was no undergrowth was used below the trees and if that had been done...I would honestly say an excellent job was done. Overall a very very good job in this area.

Best Hole: Many holes here were nicely done. The two best were #8 and #13. Hole #8 was a nice par 4 that feature one of the two split fairways. It was well planted and a variety of textures were used. Very tricky to play. Hole #13 was a beautiful par 3 with a few streams and rocks placed in the area. The small pond was the featured hazard and it looked natural to the terrain. A very nice view and also a very good hole.

Overall: A excellent first attempt with the APCD. A good parkland style course with smooth surroundings. The course itself is very challenging and fun to play. I recommend a download here to give it a try....you might just thank me later.
