LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

This is the first design by Monte Comeau as far as I know. The design starts off very nice with a lovely cameo and splash screen. It is set in the mountains and is in between a woodland and parkland style course. The course is rather long and all but one of the par 5's is not reachable. This course does one thing that I have never seen. The front nine is superb with the exception of small minor flaws. The back nine on the other hand is if another designer took over. There is nothing similar about the two halves. So I will do my best to tell you what I saw.

Front Nine- Was well designed and very fun to play. almost every view was wonderful and I could not believe how nice the planting was. The variety was unmatched and the terrain was very nice. Every now and then you would see a small flaw, but overall the front nine was a site for sore eyes. Carts, animals, and other amenities were well placed and the play was excellent. I shot -7 thru nine holes. The few lakes I saw were expertly built and looked very natural. I could not have done any better myself.

Back Nine- Was a totally different story. The tees were all over the place. Verts were spewed here and there and the shadows were cast almost everywhere you looked. The hills were very extreme in some cases. On the 10th hole was a 133 foot hill about 200 yards out from the tee. My ball hit there on the fly and spun back 60 yards. The greens were elevated almost looking like they were in concrete blocks. Trees were on the fringe and the fairways. The fairways, in some places, were only 5 yards across. Talk about tight. The 10th hole I shot a +12. Everything but the fairway was an unplayable lie. Trees hung over the fairway and was no way possible to get the ball thru. To top it off the fairway slanted to the right at 50 degrees making it impossible to stay on. I would almost bet NOBODY could shoot under a 10 on that hole...very unfair. The 16th hole was not much better. The water texture was pulled so much it was viewed as white and there was no texture between the fairway and water. Impossible to stay out of the water.

The course was the best of both worlds. Front nine was GREAT while the back nine was definitely rushed. The front nine was fun to play while the back nine almost caused me to throw my monitor out the window. The designer put a lot of work into this design and you can tell. But he rushed the final product.

Custom amenities: Carts, animals and small buildings were prevalent. I even saw several plants that I don't believe I saw in the APCD before.

Greens: The were very easy to putt on. Usually elevated with that blocked look. Could use more work.

Fairways: Best of both worlds. Front nine great back nine very poor.

Tee Boxes: Quite nice with a fairway fringe around it to liven up the texture..

Bunkers: They were usually flat without much definition. Some had strange elevations to them, especially on the back side.

Planting: Planting was varied and well established with various bushes and grasses acting as undergrowth. There were only trees around the holes and spotty in other areas, but overall was quite good.

Best Hole: I would have to say the 2nd hole was my favorite. A long par 3 with a quaint little pond that was well planted. Overall this was easily the best hole. The green was above average here and if the designer approached the rest of the course as he did here...we would be talking about a gem.

Overall: A nice quaint long mountain course with narrow fairways and plush vegetation. Could use major work on the back nine and was definitely rushed to be released. I wish I could rate each side separately, but I can not. If it were reworked I would LOVE to play it again.
