LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chris Gormley
Initial Impressions: This is a Coastal Desert Course with very sparse vegetation. Mostly stock textures seem to have been used and the general course layout tends to be 'grip it and rip it' in style. Some very good scores could be shot on this course.
Greens: For the most part the greens are very large and nicely contoured. Some of the greens are shaped in ways that just don't always appear natural. But most greens are well done and easy to put on. No impossible slopes even in Firm, Fast conditions. All approach shots into the greens are also clear and easy to see.
Fairways: Most fairways are decent only a couple were very narrow in the landing zones, hole #2 is a good example of this. Very little strategy is needed to keep things in the fairway when playing. The basic elevations were very nice but caused some sharp edges to appear. The edges never really came into play but were more of a distraction than anything else.
Tee Boxes: All were large and clear from obstructions for the drives. Sharp edges here as well that were a visual distraction from the course.
Bunkers and Water Hazards: The bunkers contained some dry grass textures that were stretched and just did not fit the course in my opinion. Another texture may have been a better idea here. Bunkers and water were well placed in logical places throughout the course but never really came into play unless your shot is a wayward one. The only time water comes into play is on #15 where you are tempted to really clobber your second shot to make your approach a very short and easy shot but the fairway landing zone slopes down gradually right into the water hazard. Very nice construction on this hole, got me to go swimming both times J Holes #13 and #17 had some problems though. #13 the ocean appears to be higher than the little creek that flows into it.(I know something minor but I had to hit over there just to see why things looked funny) #17 looked like it was rushed and just never cleaned up after first placing the hazards, very tough to look at this hole with all the sharp edges.
Planting: Planting throughout the course is very sparse but that was probably intended. Some more variety would have been better as I believe I counted only a couple different types of plants and trees being used throughout the course. This is definitely not an 'eye candy' course. But like I said that was probably planned that way.
Fairness: Ok for all swing types. Would be a good challenge for a power stroke player but a clicker would defiantly want to have Wind while playing.
Best Hole: Hard to pick as nothing really stood out on this course. But the best to look at would have to be the shot off the tee from hole #8. Granted most of this is from the pano but it is very nice to look at. I would also have to throw #15 in here as well just for the water hazard I mentioned earlier.
Overall: Rugged Coast CC is not a bad course, but could be improved greatly if some things in the construction were cleaned up. There are some very good ideas in this courses design but it lacks that 'finish' that the best courses have. Now I don't mean the occasional vert out of place here, just some of the basic things like bunker finishing, and planting. If you like a 'grip and rip it' type of course this is one for you.
