CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg)

Description
Imaginary, Concept Course
Location
Somewhere offworld
Conditions
Anything beyond M*/M* might prove too frustrating
Concept  6/10
It\'s hard to know exactly what to do with this review. If it were 100% original material, I\'m sure it would be praiseworthy. However, it\'s a re-heat of Chuck Clark\'s Swirling Sands, with some admittedly impressive foresting and 3D clubhouse, and a new panorama thrown in. Comparing it to the likes of Rivendell, though, I can\'t help but feel more should have been done with the raw material. And the fact that the golf course underneath has barely been altered? Well, it\'s a shame.
Appearance  8/10
One thing not in doubt is the alien-style landscape, with sandy textures topped by dense foresting, and the impressive backdrop is crowned with one of the more elaborate and eccentric clubhouses you will ever see. But the view obfuscates the golf, rather than complementing it, and a recurring theme might be the wish to see rather more.
Playability  7/10
There is a certain charm and novelty value to the course, but it\'s not difficult to see through to some fairly heavily-trodden target golf. Play off the back tees and you\'ll realise how cynical the bunkers are, and the less said about accurate putting the better.
Challenge  4/10
Federation Park is a terminal scramble for par. The elaborate and (literally) other-worldly green complexes will spend a great amount of time channeling even good approaches off into bunkers (and even untimely water traps). The desert landscape makes even the closest of missed drives into an almost certain dropped shot. The greens are ostensibly \'fair\', but too many positions require virtually a trick-shot putt. Not a tournament course...
Technical  8/10
It\'s difficult to find technical fault, and the course always has a significant fact going in its favour that it was hardly intended to be taken seriously. But with two experienced designers involved in production, there will always be something to enjoy.
Overall A bit ridiculous, and it\'s a shame that it\'s not original material. But Trekkies will want a play nevertheless. 33/50
