CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg)

Description
Fictional, desert course
Location
Inspired by, and evocative of, real courses in Arizona
Conditions
M*/M* is the absolute fastest, and I\'d be tempted to go a smidge lower.
Concept  6/10
The new record-holder for \'longest in gestation\', various versions of The Horizons have been hanging around since 2004, but it has been fine-tuned well to make a fun - if slightly disconnected - set of holes. I can\'t say with all honesty that it\'s the right style for a desert course, even a fine-manicured country club, but there has been enough playtesting to ensure that each hole has the right balance of judgement, skill and ballsiness.
Appearance  5/10
The very dark textures are evocative and nicely defined, but almost completely out-of-sync with the desert. The aim was presumably to make the rocks large, but it does just look like they\'ve been mis-scaled. The pano is impressive but doesn\'t quite tally up with the small course plot. The bunkers are straight-down extruded. This is fairly minor comment when you take account of the course as a whole, which looks fresh, different and pretty realistic.
Playability  7/10
I love the opportunities presented here to attack fairways and greens, and the fact that the desert is playable adds new dimensions to the frequent dog-leg holes. The Horizons makes a cracking matchplay course.
Challenge  8/10
This has always been the best-judged aspect to The Horizons. Despite a few greens which are hard work, there is a good rollercoaster ride here, with some eminently beatable holes crowding around a stiff turn. It feels right, and so do the scores that result.
Technical  6/10
You have to admire the passion and perseverance in bringing this course back from the dead and the way in which ongoing feedback has been incorporated. OK, so there is a weakness or two, but The Horizons remains highly playable and competitive thanks to this degree of patience.
Overall A little disjointed, but this is a twist on desert courses that isn\'t altogether unpalatable. 32/50
