COURSE NOTES |
My first course design.
This is a 9 hole municipal golf course located in central Maine. The 10th hole is actually the driving range. Thanks to everyone at Links and APCD for the tutorials and some textures I used from other courses.

Description Real, parkland course |
Location Maine |
Conditions I would settle for S*/M* |
Concept 5/10 I\'ll never begrudge anyone the opportunity to re-create their local municipal course in place of one of the \'big stagers\', and Jim has done a fair job with Dexter. Certainly, it\'s a bit of fun being able to \'play the driving range\' as the final 10th hole. The course itself is better than routine, featuring a good selection of landing areas and enough to make you think twice about whether you want to attack the greens on the 300-ish yard Par 4s. |
Appearance 5/10 The tree-line has received a lot of care and attention and is definitely a strong aspect of the course. Further down, the straight extrusions of the bunkers are less pretty and most of the linear objects look rather un-tuned. Oddest of all is the way the entire plot appears to tilt to one side, giving the golfer a rather vertiginous round. It may be a hillside course, I don\'t know, but it\'s slightly uncomfortable viewing. |
Playability 4/10 Other than the fact you might be more comfortable propping one side of your monitor on a book, there is a rather intrusive sound effect or two, and you don\'t really see much of the course because of the hole lengths. Having 10 holes is a major nuisance when it comes to creating feasible competitions too. |
Challenge 8/10 Although the quality control on the greens is a little variable, it\'s intriguing how difficult it is to steamroller this course, and that\'s not all due to the putting. The slopes on the course add a fair contribution to difficulty, as do some twisty hole shapes and a good use of small ponds. Although if you don\'t score a birdie or better on the 10th hole you can be thoroughly ashamed. |
Technical 5/10 Although there are definite nitpicks, Jim has created a coherent and playable course here and one that most people will be happy to play again. |
Overall |
A little odd in areas, but there are recompenses in some tasteful planting and interesting greening. |
