COURSE NOTES |
This is an updated version of "the Stonebriar at ponte vedra" released May 2005. I must preface that this course was a (redo) of a 1st time design "legacy Point" released in 2004. It was completely redone (except for the hole layouts) into "the Stonebriar".
7 yrs later I have since learned a little more about the APCD and wanted to design another course, but before that I HAD TO attempt to fix and update some of the errors on stonebriar. I've spent the last couple months working on it but frankly only so much could done. I partially seam-blended it, added high-res textures and toned down some of the planting. Also remodelled some of the holes.
This course is not on the level of you top designers, but still I think a big improvement to the original release. It plays 7000 yds and to the eye seams a little easy, but don't let that fool you, with tight fairways and challenging greens its a tough test. again..you"ll see some occasional errors here and there, buts its still a fun course to play. Hope you enjoy it!

CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg) |
Description Fictional, estate course |
Location Convincingly part of the Florida location intended. |
Conditions S*/S* is probably wise. |
Concept 7/10 An impressive, if sometimes imperfect, course, The Stonebriar has been nicely visualised by its designer with a range of target-driven
holes, and the influences from the likes of Sawgrass and Bay Hill are very apparent. The occasional silliness or flaw is forgiveable
down the lovely gargantuan finishing hole, which is a worthy finish. |
Appearance 4/10 Adequate planting at tree level does little to disguise the hastiness of the bunkers and water features, and the deep green texture set is
perhaps a bit anomalous and amateurishly blended. But the mesh-handling is the worst - very poor at many points with folds and
extrusion marks nearly all the way around. |
Playability 6/10 Despite the many flaws, I really like playing the Stonebriar - the holes are presented well and with some clear intent from the designer,
and there's little by way of blind shots or boredom. Critically, though, when the technical flaws start impacting on your game, it's time to
seek out something else. |
Challenge 7/10 The greens are most definitely not of a standard that plays quickly, and some of the water is pushed up problematically close to
fairways. On the flipside, the rough is escapable, and the short course length gives several shots at birdies, or better. It's a bit of an
extreme balance, and you wouldn't want it in your tournament rotation, but it works well enough. |
Technical 3/10 The big puzzle for me is why, after several incarnations, The Stonebriar still retains such poor flaws in the handling of the surface. Surely,
despite all the great intentions and visual acuity, this should have been remedied by now? It's a fairly basic and unforgivable error, which
can only be cause for a low score. |
Overall |
Not the best pieced-together course, but the designer has conveyed the imaginings
of fun golf well with limited resource. |
27/50 |
