LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by James Wood

First Impressions:

This is a recreation of one of the stops on the PGA tour. Tom Goodrick based his recreation on a yardage and layout book dated from 1987. A description of the real course is as follows:

'The TPC Stadium Golf Course is an architectural triumph of matchless beauty. It has an international reputation as "The Western Home of Golf in America." The course has generous landing areas, deep pot bunkers, and large, undulating greens. Inspired by the Scottish seaside courses, its design is rugged and dramatic. This course has hosted the 1986-1991 Skins Game, the 1987 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in 1995 and 1996. The course is user friendly, but offers a test of target golf where accuracy is rewarded while errant shots are severely penalized. There are tiered landing areas, firm elevated greens, and jagged greenside bunkers. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 6th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. "GOLF Magazine" rated it 24th best under the 1998 category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." "Golf Digest" also ranked it as the 16th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 18th best for 1997-98. In addition "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 78th among "America's 100 Best Modern Courses" for 1997, and 91st in 1998.'

This is a desert course with a mountain panorama. The course is flat, the greens are fairly flat, and the fairways are very generous. The only planting on the course is sparse with palm trees, Japanese style trees, scrub trees, and grass. There is only one set of tee boxes. The bunkers are done in the old Links style with no extrusion and no lip. The water has been flattened and looks okay. Beside the shadows around the fringes and bunkers there are no other visual anomalies.

Strategy:

This is a very easy course to play. The par 5's are reachable on the front 9. The par 3's are fairly long however. There is no penalty for straying off the fairways unless you're very unfortunate and land behind the odd tree.

Favorite Hole:

Par 3 #17. This is the famous island green par 3 where so many PGA events have been won or lost.

Overall:

This is probably a good learners course. Unleash your kid's on it and they'll have a blast. It's hard to get into (if not nearly impossible) too much trouble.
