Palamino is one of Stuart's earlier designs and came in for some acclaim when it was released in January. It is a fictional mountain course with plenty of trees and water and cacti????? Don't ask me why but they are there, never seen a mountain course with cacti before!
I know Stuart has been re-doing some of his courses and I have previously reviewed Federation and Victoria, unfortunately I haven't got any of his new versions but they have been well received. Palamino is actually a pleasant course, there are some great holes here, no custom textures but the bunkers are of a good standard as are the water hazards, the greens are extremely testing, which I enjoyed, and the feel of the course was very good.
He is probably sick of re-doing courses, but I feel this one would also benefit from a new visit from Stuart, the design is fine but maybe some custom textures, even Whistlers mountain is okay, the bunkers could be spruced up a bit, although pretty good anyway, the planting could be tidied up and made a little tighter.. And the cacti!!! Well they HAVE to go!
I know Stuart is likely to reply to this review and I will be glad to hear what he thinks, I am sure that this course could be a real belter and isn't bad as it is, I will not be getting rid of it, not until it is re-worked anyway.
Best Hole: I particularly like the par 5 10th which has fir trees in front of you which you hit over, the tee shot being risk/reward, go for it and you should be able to get onto the second strip of fairway, if you fail you will end up with a difficult shot to make the green in two and get a possible eagle.
The second shot is again risk/reward, if you go for it you have to hit it spot on to get to the elevated green guarded by a large bunker at the front.
Once on the green you then have to contend with an undulating green making a birdie very pleasing if you can get it.
Overall: A very nice course that has some faults and also looks a little tame compared to some of the great courses that are coming out now. Even so at only 13MB you won't be too disappointed if you add this to your collection.
