LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by James Woods
First Impressions:
This is a fictional course with a parkland style of planting. Set at the base of Whistlers Mountain the planting is varied and colorful. Good planting off to the sides of the tee boxes and good changes throughout the course including rock formations on the back nine. Tournament objects are seen but not over used with other objects strewn about including ball washes, trashcans, and buildings. The fairways are generous with hazards places in the appropriate spots to catch the errant shot. The greens are well shaped and they are a good size. There are some undulations and slopes but I saw nothing severe or out of the ordinary.
Strategy:
Out of the four par 5's three are reachable and carry good risk on the second shot. One of the par fours on the back is tempting but can't be reached with even the best shot and it isn't worth the risk. No hazards block the tee shots and the doglegs are not really a hindrance here. The occasional water hazard can be easily avoided. You should score well on this course.
Favorite Hole:
A good example of the type of planting done on the course can be found on the very 1st tee box. Notice that the colors used are off to the side and in front of the viewer. They aren't surrounding the tee box or right in the golfers face. This scene looks very natural and is indicative of the planting done on the entire course.
Overall:
If not for the occasional bad edge particularly where the fringes mate with the greens, where textures meet, and around the sand bunkers this course would have stood out quite a bit more from the crowd. As it is it's still a good golf course. It looks like a golf course and it plays like a golf course. The layout is solid and it is a very fair course for any type of style. The planting was very well done and with a little more skill with the designer tools the designer of this course could certainly produce a top quality course on his next effort. As it stands I would certainly recommend it for downloading although I don't know how long it would stay on someone's hard drive with the quality of courses coming out lately.
