LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Ian Downs
The Course is set close to the waters edge, which is heavily guarded against the weather by lava rock. Assuming this is the ocean and not a large lake, it is difficult to ascertain, due to the reflective nature of the water against the panoramic view, which in places doesn't gel well.
The Course is openly laid out. Trees guide the hole perimeters but rarely come into play. The fairways are very wide, and mostly unmisseable. Scatterings of flowers make this course differentiate between the grey lava rock and the colour of the beddings. The greens are mostly flat and easy to navigate across.
Some tough holes though make this one to consider. The 9th tee shot on a par 5 make it extremely tough to get across the large water to reach the first fairway. Playing in breezy myself with wind slightly against, I was unable to make it. Not what windy would have done. Even after being forced into a drop at the end of the tee's, it would prove very difficult into a strong wind to progress any further.
There are a few things that could have been looked at through the course too, some areas around fairways were sharp, with a hard drop into the rough. The area behind the 14th green/fairway was rolled into the rough, looking visually wrong. There was no texture in part of a 16th fairway bunker. A path on the 13th hole was twisted badly. The fairway behind the green seemed too raised too. The 17th green edges also needed a few final tweaks. These are the general faults that I tend to look for, rather than play the course. In playing, aside from the 9th hole, it certainly isn't bad. We have seen worse than this.

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen
This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.
Bill Sheehan is the designer of Lost Cove. This course is in a park setting with lots of trees, sand traps and as the name suggests, a cove comes into play on almost every hole. This is a great looking course and really enjoyed my round at Lost Cove.
Visuals: Looks Great. A few rough edges but did not affect play in the least.
Off the Tee: Your tee shots at Lost Cove are fairly easy if you can hit the snap. Most of the landing areas are wide and you will not encounter many problems here. Hole #1 is a Par 4 that measures over 500 yards, but you can hit your approach over the cove and make the green. On hole #2, you will need a slight power drive to get to the fairway. On #6, you will also need a big drive to have a chance to get on the green in 2. A lay-up may be the best option on this hole. Hole #9 also forces you to hit a big drive and a big 3W to leave yourself a good approach on this Par 5. This hole has a large green and you could be left with a 20+-yard putt. You will encounter a tough dogleg Par 4 at hole #12.
The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Lost Cove are easy to moderate. The greens are very receptive but you will have to contend with some moderate slopes on about half of the fairways.
Putting: Putting is easy at Lost Cove. Most of the greens have little or no break. Most of the pins are in the middle of the greens as well.
Nice design Bill. Good Luck on your next course.
