LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Designer: This is Daniel Watson's first course release.

Course: From the first tee a vital mistake in design philosophy was already committed, and that is to not block the tee areas with objects or trees, which unfortunately, goes on to occur a few times throughout the layout. Also on the front nine, some of the holes were too close to the end of the plot, with only the panorama being viewable and no trees being planted in the area. Bunkers are a vital part in any course design, but it seemed that their shape and placement around the layout was dull and monotonous, with none of them coming close to being unique. The use of the larger rock areas around the course was at least different, and made the visuals somewhat interesting. The blind uphill Par 3 on Hole 12 over rocks was a good idea, but was perhaps made a little too difficult due to the height above the tee the hole was. One of the most puzzling things in the design is why there was four Par 5's on the back nine, and only one on the front, as not only is that impractical, but it also makes the Par for the front and back nine nowhere near equal at 34/38, which is not something you'd find in real life. The course itself is quite long, but with Par 4's like Hole 16 and even Hole 18 being longer than needed, the course is a little bit more difficult than it should have been.

Favourite Hole: My favourite hole on the course was probably the Par 3 on Hole 1, certainly not because of the objects near the tee, but because it's not often you start a round off with an iron on a Par 3, so I at least liked the individuality of that design decision.

Playability: Once on the green, the challenge of putting will be reasonably difficult, with some tough curve and sloping being used in the greens. The Par 4 on Hole 3 is reachable off the tee, while even though the course may be reasonably long no matter what tee you choose to play off, shooting a low score should be easy enough to accomplish.

Technically: Even though this was a 2003 design and the potential was there for the course to stand out, the APCD work was only average, and no advanced techniques were used anywhere around the course. There was repetitive planting on occasion, while none of the bunkers had lips. The course overall had satisfactory APCD work, but for it to have been better, it needed to have custom textures or some advanced APCD techniques, which can all be learnt from the various APCD tutorials that are available.

Other: Even though the course does contain a splash screen, it unfortunately doesn't include any other extras.

Download Value: At just under 8mb, LnL G.C. is a small download, but if you are looking for extras, you won't be getting any, as the zip contains nothing but the course file. The course is quite clean looking, and slightly interesting due to the various rock mounds found around the layout, but I can only recommend this to people who like first time designs, as it's not a course I will be burning to CD.
