Designer: This is Eric Aasen's first course design released to the community.
Course: Even though the course visually may not be totally appealing, the design itself is still relatively difficult, with subtle elevation and undulation changes throughout the course, while with some small greens and tight fairways, regulation percentages off the tee are likely to remain low. The hole designs vary from slight realism to fictional, and some times even fantasy designs, while with some tough bunker positioning, each hole is quite challenging. The large rocks and water were nice scenic variations, while Hole 18 is certainly an interesting finish to a round of golf.
Favourite Hole: The Par 5 on Hole 12 was my favourite hole, as the water offered up a nice change in the scenery, while the lay-up and third shot was something different to think about.
Playability: The Par 3's on this course are fairly tough, with small greens and bunkers waiting to swallow up any misplaced shots. Regrettably, there were too many lengthy Par 4's, with Hole 16 for example being an uphill hole of 474 yards, and probably better as a Par 5. In regard to putting, often you'll find yourself faced with similar putts each time due to the sloping used on each of the greens, but with defensive pin placements, make sure not to be too aggressive, or else your ball may roll right off the green. Don't expect low scores on this course, as unless you have extreme winds and two incredibly good shots, the Par 5's won't be reachable and therefore eagle opportunities not possible, so don't expect Rock Water C.C. to be easy to play just because of how simple it may look.
Technically: As a 2003 course design, there was an opportunity to include many advanced techniques from the APCD, but unfortunately the course was deficient in attention to detail throughout. The joins between textures were unclean, while the bunkers had no lips. The water had no edging with that of the land, while there were cases of unfair playability due to technical inaccuracy, with the area left of the green on Hole 1 dropping off completely. Some of the sloping near the greens overall was quite unfair, while the tees were poorly placed on most of the tee areas. Even though the course could have been improved in many areas, most of the issues on this course were cosmetic, so in the future, if more time is spent using the available advanced APCD techniques, the visuals are sure to improve.
Other: The course doesn't contain a cameo, custom flags or tees, handicaps, hole previews or a splash screen, but does have crowds and tournament objects. What this course lacked, as with a majority of first time designs, was beta testing and input from other players in the community. If the designer intends to release courses in the future, I'd recommend reading as many tutorials as possible on the APCD, while also getting the course thoroughly beta tested, which will always result in a better overall design.
Download Value: Being very small in comparison to most other courses, the course is a quick download for any user, but unfortunately, doesn't contain anything within the zip file. If you like first time designs, or would like a challenge, then give this course a go, but for me, it won't be staying on my hard drive or being burnt to CD.
