LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Designer: This is James Schuster's second release.

Course: The biggest feature of this course is certainly its length, and even though the average driving length is longer with the elevation changes on each hole, there are instances like the second shot on Hole 14, where with high winds against you, the hole may become unplayable. Unfortunately, the style of hole designs became repetitive, with bunkers and water seeming to be just placed for the sake of doing so, rather than positioned properly, and overall, the only real challenge on this Par 74 course is the length of the design.

Favourite Hole: The Par 4 on Hole 16 would be my favourite hole on the course, as unlike the other holes on the course where you can just grip and rip the driver off the tee, on this hole, you really need to know your length well to stay in regulation, as with a short drive, the ball will hit water.

Playability: Considering how long this course is, it would be a welcome relief if the greens were easy to putt on once reached, but with unpredictable curve and sloping, as well as poor pin placements, putting can at times be quite difficult. With the Par 3's being simple target golf, and the Par 4's only test being an occasionally difficult bunker, staying in regulation is the only concern you should have when playing this design. If you play this course using high winds, you should expect high scores, as many of the fairways are quite tight, and with none of the Par 5's being reachable in two shots, there are no eagle opportunities to help lower a players overall score.

Technically: In terms of quality APCD work, the course unfortunately is lacking of it. Repetitive planting of trees exists throughout the course, while the bunkers and water have not been edged properly. At the start of the round, there are some holes which are much too close to the edge of the land plot, while the addition of the oversized houses was more of a negative distraction than something of value. The course really just needs to be cleaned up and smoothed out, as aesthetically, there is nothing appealing to keep a player interested. More attention needs to be paid to the bunkers, fairway and greens, as by leaving even the smallest of errors unattended, playability can be affected, and often, players will not be interested in completing a full round of golf.

Other: With no cameo, custom flag, handicaps, hole previews or a splash screen, the course is very bare in terms of extras, with the only addition seeming to be stock tournament objects. In comparison to the previous course by the designer, Pine River Valley is very similar in its styling, and APCD wise, there has been no visible improvement. As I've recommended before, getting the course beta tested and using the designer's forum to seek out help would greatly benefit any future designs.

Download Value: Being just over 7mb, the course is a quick download. If you enjoyed the designer's previous release or like extremely long courses, then perhaps this is a design for you, but with nothing included in the zip file and no advanced APCD techniques being found within the course, it won't be staying on my hard drive.
