LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Designer: This is Rich Fairman's second design, having previously released The Berkshire Retreat G.C.
Course: This course certainly has a lot to offer in many places, but unfortunately doesn't remain constant throughout. Some of the Par 4 hole designs were excellent, while others seemed too plain, but with some very creative bunker designs, the course is able to maintain a good level of playability. The course would have benefited more from more elevations and undulations, while even though the visuals near the greens were great, that wasn't the case from many of the tees. The snake styled hole designs seemed to have been used too much, while many of the hole designs seemed to vary from fictional to that of a fantasy nature. The course is certainly not far fetched though, and will please players who are looking for both aesthetic and playability features.
Favourite Hole: My favourite hole would be the Par 5 on Hole 4, as with water winding throughout the hole, and bunkers lying in wait, the course is both challenging and great to look at.
Playability: With many bunkers spread throughout and water used well around the course, players need to be aware that the course can quickly become difficult if it isn't managed correctly. With Hole 6 being drivable and possibly also 16 in the right conditions, players are able to shoot low scores, but without a high level of accuracy off the tee, high scores are more likely. Putting can be difficult, with the greens ranging in size and slope, so getting the ball close to the pin will be the difference in shooting birdies or bogies.
Technically: What was evident with this design, was that the designer paid careful attention to particular areas of the course, but didn't to others. The APCD work, including bunkers, planting and textures was good, but not to the stage of being classed as excellent. Textures were clean, but no seam blending was used, while even though some bunkers were exceptionally well done, others seemed to have been created differently and didn't have the same lip technique being used. Tournament objects were used well around the course, but small things like making sure the junior and ladies tees played at the right distance was what this course needed to be of a higher quality.
Other: The course doesn't contain a cameo, handicaps, or hole preview, but does have a custom flag and splash screen. I'd recommend to the designer to not get carried away with the placement of hazards when designing, as a course should remain consistent throughout, and not drift between styles, while it's important to not be afraid in using elevations, as players need to be challenged in many ways, and not just with hazards.
Download Value: Being less than 17mb, the course isn't large, so if you liked his previous course or are looking for a small download, then give this a go. Considering there are no extras in the zip file, and the file name is different to that of the actual course, such little mistakes are some of the reasons why this design won't be staying on my hard drive.
