COURSE NOTES
Don't like the driving range? Need to test shots on a flat course? Want something more practical? Try the COMPLEX. This course was designed for testing shots and just as importantly, warming up prior to playing new rounds. A great place to warm up.

At the Complex, the first 13 holes go up in distance at the same rate your clubs do. So you start off on Hole 1 at 80 yards using your lob wedge and working your way up to the 13th using your driver. You can test the distance of each club and the effect of wind, breezy, or no wind on flat conditions. And the green literally looks like a target.

The Tees at the Complex are extra special as they consist of four types of terrain. Tee, Rough, Deep Rough, and Sand. That's right, on your tee box just move around into the different terrains and test your shots. While the course only took two full days to prepare and plant, I think you will find this a great way to warm up or test shots. Try it and see.

LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by: Chuck Clark

Background: Mr. Queen is well know to the Links community as a designer and frequent contributor to the forum boards (aka Renegade). I am a big fan of his previous designs especially Gooseneck Bay and Chelshire Estates. The Complex is a practice course put together in very short order.

Overall Impression: This course works perfectly as it is intended. It is a practice course. The first thirteen tees are all arranged in a circle around a central green. You shoot at the same green from each of these tees. The lengths start at LW range (80 yards) and go up from there one club at a time. The thirteenth hole is driver length (275 yards). Each tee has four textures: tee, rough, deep rough and sand. You can move your ball around in practice mode and test out shots from each of these conditions. Each hole is completely flat and so is the perfectly round central green (about 34 yards in diameter). The green is basically an island in the middle of a big fairway type area. When the new Mod comes out (which changes the roll characteristics) this course will be perfect for testing out your distances before you try to play 'you know where'.

Holes 14 thru 18 are all aimed towards a different green. Unlike the first thirteen holes, this green is nicely sloped and has some good practice bunkers around it. It is prefect for practicing your short irons, sand bunker play and chipping.

Playability/Shot Values: N/A

Visuals: For a practice course put together in a 'few days' it actually looks just fine. Mr. Queen planted some trees, 'built' a few structures and even added a pano to give it a nicely finished look.

Technique: Not bad considering the length of time devoted to building it (see above).

Favorite Hole: N/A

Summary: Built and intended to be a practice course or practice grounds. Succeeds at this premise! The Complex is a good place to practice all your clubs and log your distances from various lies and conditions. If you download it for this purpose then you won't be disappointed.

Concept  2/10
Less a course than a training utility, The Concept uses tee boxes with a variety of textures to aim at a single, central, flat green, followed by a putting-practice green with more of an angle. I can see how, in practice mode, it would be useful: played as a set of 18 it's poor, because you can't play from the various textures and there is but 1 pin position for all but the last hole. It doesn't really take imagination in depth to come up with something like this, and I'm afraid it doesn't float my boat.
Appearance  5/10
There are some nice touches, including grass planting to various depths on the 'deep rough' tee, a hill-fronted panorama and subtle 'target' textures on the green. But there's not much else to look at: something artistic in the background might have helped, or even a scattering of pertinent trees might have broken up the monotony.
Playability  1/10
What's to like? Flat putts, easy shots. Played as a course, it's risible at best. In practice mode, I suppose, there might be sufficient variety in the options off the tee, but I doubt it'd convince anyone to spend more than 5 minutes on the course.
Challenge  0/10
Anyone who can't make par on all of these holes needs to be looking for an easier golf game. Even if playing out of a tough texture means you can't reach the green, there's still an easy enough approach due to nothing greenside and lack of gradient. The real skill here is hitting your snap.
Technical  3/10
Self-proclaimed as couple of days' work, The Complex is essentially flawless, and some neat little additions prevent it being utterly pointless. But it'd never be acclaimed as a work of art and - at best - looks like something that seemed like a good idea for a while, but wasn't necessarily brought to a full and imaginative head.
Overall Possibly of use for trialling out your shots. Certainly not compulsory, and leaves you wanting to design something better yourself. 11/50
