LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is the first design by Brent Aschacher. It is a fictional parkland style course set with a nice mountain backdrop. The fairways are quite vast but you rarely are able to use a driver off the tee due to trees and sand traps set at the perfect position to spoil even a great shot. The course itself is very undulous and offers a great view on most holes. It is a rather short course playing at 6285 from the back tees, but plays MUCH longer than it looks. It is common to have an uneven lie which can cause you to reconsider shot selection. Many of the tee shots I had to use a 3w offf the tee due to the hilly terrain and not being able to drive the ball more than 280 yards. The course is very challenging all the way through.

There are a few smallish pond like areas with many streams that cross in your line of site. They are both well designed and look great. The tee locations are stocked with a few amenities such as a bench and golf bags. Most of the tee locations are elevated giving for a great view of the fairway. The colors chosen for the design were quite good. The main cut of rough was brown while the 1st cut was dark green. It made the course unique in itself. Overall a very good course with very challenging game play. There were a few areas of shadows on elevations between texture seams, but other than that....very well done and I enjoyed my round with the exception of my poor score.

Although it is a very nice course...I feel it may be a little too tough for the average PS player. Clickers that want a serious challenge...this is your course. Also noted that the 1st cut of rough, the brown deep grass, and the sand traps allowed for a drop. This may have been intentional, but for some reason I think the designer just neglected to change the properties.

Custom amenities: Benches and a golf bag was present at each tee box. Hot air balloons are seen one half of the holes and add a very colorful touch.

Greens: They were generally very small and very tough to putt on at times. A few of the pin locations were very close within 6 feet of the fringe. Several of the greens also have very drastic undulations that may cause frustration among many golfers. The very dark green fringe kinda stood out too much compared to the rest of the light textures.

Fairways: They were very undulating and offered a continuous challenge. They were nicely edged with a 1st cut of rough. They were also extruded for a 3d look.

Tee Boxes: Very nicely done and also had an extrusion for the added depth.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: The bunker work was above average but the orange texture gave you an option to drop. This may have been on purpose, but for some reason I suspect the designer just forgot to change its properties. The water hazards were expertly done and among the best I have seen. Rocks and plants were nicely used to enhance this feature.

Planting: Planting was done very well and was the best part of the design. The rocks and bushes added alot to the course and made it look very realistic.

Best Hole: Many of the holes were very nice but I chose the #11 hole. It was a short par 4 that offered an excellent view off the tee. The rocky pond and stream were a great addition...all it needed were the sounds to top it off.

Overall: A very colorful and difficult mountain parkland style course with much to offer. Almost every shot is challenged by hazards and trees and will offer alot for the clicking world. I do feel it is slightly to difficult for the average PS player and that is its only drawback. Very well done.

Dave Campbell's thoughts..

This course is a parkland style course listed as fictional but strays often into fantasy. It has an unusual par of 69 and distance from the back tees of 6,285 yards. It is visually very beautiful and has a layout unlike any other you have seen. Fairways have a 'snaky' look as they wind back and forth. Stands of trees are often in your desired shot path, as well as sprouting up right out of the fairways. Hazards of all types come into play and the fairways have a nice 1st cut before you get to the GUR texture (fortunately this texture is playable). The planting allows for recovery shots most of the time and the greens are very puttable, which adds an element of fairness to the course. With the very manageable length it is an enjoyable course to play.

It is an 'eye candy' course with vivid textures and a look at about everything a golf course can offer. There is rock work, well done and strategically placed water, both standard and pot type bunkers, a wide variety of planting and imaginative and thought provoking hole layouts.

The fairway elevations are rolling and will have you pondering long over some approaches. You will have a chance to pick up some shots on the greens as many have non-existent to very subtle elevations.

Kerry Glen is an outstanding first course that is a joy to play, even at PS Champ level. One tip I might offer, lose the long irons and replace them with fairway woods (2,3,4 iron with 5,6,7W). This will give you a higher trajectory to clear the many trees and will help you hold the green. Remarkable course Brent and I recommend a download to anyone.

Test round score: +3 61%FIR 38%GIR 27 putts. I played awful during this round, don't think I hit the snap once. Even so a decent score for PS at Champ level. I call this course unusual but very fair.

Best hole: All are good in their own way. I opt for the short par 4 11th. The fairway shape forces a 3W off the tee and brings a little pond into play. You'll have to contend with trees on your approach and there is a gorgeous sod walled bunker behind the green. My screenshot shows me ready to hit my approach. Incidentally, I hit my 6 iron 3.5 feet from the hole :^)

Perhaps the only snap I hit all round.
