LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Ian Downs
Amidst the edge of the land, and near the ocean, Kalifornia appears as one of those courses that with a different panoramic view, it may be good, if not a pleasure to see the change. Unfortunately, for me, it becomes neither.
The course layout is quite good. Dogleg holes, bunkers scattered here and there and quite large in many areas. Even placed well enough too, and causing such positioning that they become the splash shot to the course. There are a few double greens too, that for some may hold interest. I would also like to mention the bordering of the flower and conservation areas, that have raised areas around them in the form of blocks. Perhaps with a little more visual texture use they could have looked very nice.
Suffice to say though, the course isn't too difficult and is quite open for many tee shots. Greens are not too hard and they are of average size to shoot for.
The work that is still needed on the course does number quite a lot. There are more than enough dark shadows through out the course, and highly elevated areas that need better shaping. On many occasions did a stray shot bounce off the rough back into the fairway too often. The fringes are elevated badly too, and very few balls will stop on any fringe other than front of greens. The 5th hole has a pulled vert in the rough bordering to the deep grass that was missed. The 9th and 18th holes show the buildings behind the holes, which look similar to cardboard cutouts. When closer inspected, they have trees planted in the concrete surrounding the buildings too. And, for want of not bringing it up, waters edging could also be better formed to show better a lead into the water, rather than terrain stops, water starts.

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen
This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.
Matt DeSousa is the designer of KALIfornia C.C. KALIfornia C.C. is a Park Style course with the usual trees, sand and water. Matt included some flowers and bushes as well. KALIfornia C.C. was rated in a tie for 6th among Park Style Courses
I did notice rough edges on this course especially on the sand traps. It really did not effect my enjoyment of the round but could have been improved upon.
Visuals: KALIfornia C.C. was an average design. It looked OK but more time could have been spent on the design before release.
Playability: Your round at KALIfornia C.C. can be tough at times. Off the tee, you will encounter a few narrow fairways. Your approach shots are not too difficult if you hit the fairway with your drive. The pins are placed toward the center of the greens on most holes. You will encounter only moderate break on the greens at KALIfornia C.C.
Good design Matt. Good Luck on your next course.
