LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chris Gormley
Background Info:
This is the 1st course released by John Brasfield. Not much was said in the readme about the course except that it was a fictional course.
Overall Impressions:
For a first time designer Mr. Brasfield has done a pretty good job of handling the APCD but there are those normal '1st design issues' that you see by just about every designer. The fairways and greens were of ample size and the planning that went into the course was pretty good with some risk/reward and some easier holes to fill in the gaps. There were only a couple of areas where some unnatural shapes occurred one being on hole 12 where there were some sharp edges along the water hazard that would not normally occur in nature but for the most part the greens, fairways and hazards were conceived quite well. But they were not all constructed properly, and this is where the course has its major faults. The bunkers were extruded far too deep IMHO, thus causing some very difficult shots to occur if you are unlucky enough to get caught in one of these. This also caused some nasty shadows to appear in the top camera as well. The fairways and greens had the textures set very sharp therefore allowing me to 'putt' along the seam of the textures because the ball would not roll up and over.(I apologize if the terms I am using are incorrect but I am not a designer, just a player but I think you will understand what I am getting at here.) The terrain of the course was very natural looking without any extreme changes, although a couple of the greens were quite tilted which would create some very tricky putting on firm/fast green settings most of them were pretty flat with slight undulations.
The planting on the course was done pretty well but got a bit 'busy' in places but for a first time effort it was pretty good. There were a couple of trees that were out of proportion but nothing extreme(hole 10).
My favorite hole on this course was #15 the use of the water hazard on this hole was great with #18 giving you the best view of the course IMHO. Both of these holes were designed really well.
Closing comments:
This course has some pretty nice spots and I am rather impressed with the design of some of the holes. The designer shows that things were thought out and planned well. If the designer takes some time to consult some of the wonderful tutorials that the top designers have done for the Links community and fix up some of the flaws in the APCD work I am sure Mr. Brasfield will become a top designer. I am looking forward to his next design.
"I am writing this review from the viewpoint of not only a player but as a Tour Director. Although I am not a designer I understand the work that goes into a design as I have beta tested many courses and my review is simply how I as a player/Tour Director would view this course."
