LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chris Gormley
Background Info:
This is the 6th Course released by Michael Savicki. Only A Wacky World of Golf, and Space Adventure are still available at Links Corner. The others have been discontinued for some reason(Damaze-Falls, Damaze's Jurasic, and Mukes Lekington.) Over the past couple of years Michael has been known as the designer to push the APCD to its limits in the oddest ways. Now this is not a bad thing as his courses are completely different from traditional courses. They are constructed more for enjoyment than anything else. After playing AWWoG II you will realize that Michael has a great imagination and has some pretty good APCD skills to create a fun course like this one. I cannot review this course like I normally would as I just don't know how it could be done but here goes.
Overall Impressions:
Michael describes this course best in his readme 'Wacky World II, is designed as a Putt Putt Golf Course on Steroids. I mixed up many sports and scenes into the course, as well as trick shots to give the players a unique challenge on each hole.' After playing this course I personally could not describe it better than his initial quote so I will lead off the review with that. This course is a lot of fun to play, although you will need to set your player to have unlimited mulligans until you learn/get used to the course. This is not a traditional golf course that we are all used to. It truly is a Putt Putt golf course on some serious steroids. He has done things with the APCD that I have not seen any other designer do. There are no glaring errors in the technical aspects of the design but then how would one know with all the different shapes, tunnels, platforms, etc. that cover the course. You will see giant dartboards, dragons, windmills and even play a hole or two in outer space. The only problem I saw was that some of the graphics that Michael used were a little fuzzy, but this did not detract from the enjoyment level of this course. Everyone should really download this course and decide for themselves whether it is for them or not. There are just too many neat ideas going on here to cover in one review.
Closing comments:
This course is a lot of fun to play and a great change of pace for those players who have played a lot of traditional rounds of golf and need a break. Like Michael's courses before he has pushed the APCD in ways that no other designer has dreamed of doing. I recommend this course for people who like something different and fun. If you enjoy the traditional types of Links designs then this may not be to your liking, but give it a try anyways. I had fun playing my rounds on the course and I am sure you will as well.
"I am writing this review from the viewpoint of not only a player but as a Tour Director of a Links Tournament Site. Although I am not a designer I understand the work that goes into a design as I have beta tested many courses over the years and my review is simply how I as a player/Tour Director would view/rate this course."

CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg) |
Description Imaginary, concept course |

Conditions TBC |
Concept 10/10 A successor to the original Wacky World, this time making a better run at representing 3D obstacles and theming each of the 18 holes very clearly. It is, more than ever, just a massive Crazy Golf course, and the hole design is extremely clever, particularly the holes with sunken greens (the basketball Par 3, where you must shoot the ball if you want to hit the green, is a work of genius). Again, it won't be to everyone's taste, but the original ideas and the execution cannot be faulted. |
Appearance 8/10 This is much improved on the original Wacky World. Where a stretched stock texture would have looked silly, Michael has imported a custom texture, and all the Wacky 2D custom objects remain in proliferation. I defy you not to laugh out loud at certain holes as they appear, such is the surprise value of being asked to play golf in such a scenario (the Wizard Of Oz hole being a strong contender here). There is definitely a cleaner and more organised look than in Wacky World I, and for that it receives an accordingly higher mark. |
Playability 8/10 For some reason that does not immediately grab me, this initially felt a bit of a drag to play. I don't know if it was because the holes were made too discrete (as opposed to the original's, which seemed to blend into each other and follow some sort of natural progression), or whether I was frustrated by a couple of impossible lies, but this just didn't seem to have the get-out-there-and-smack-'em playability of the first course. Later, of course, it has immense return value, and therefore picks up more of a score. |
Challenge 2/10 I'm sorry, but the challenge here is minimal. Flat green syndrome rears its ugly head again; many holes are deliberately over-parred to account for the trick-shot nature of solving them, and consequently it is far too easy to shoot a low score. Conversely, I found the 18th hole impossible until about my fourth attempt, when I just managed to bury one in the fringe. It's not easy to set a par for a course like this, of course, but this one errs easily on the pessimistic side. |
Technical 8/10 Michael Savicki has necessarily improved and refined the amazing APCD flair he used in Wacky World I to produce a stunning-looking course. Pointing out lack of seam blends, over extrusion and bunker lips would be pointless - it's just not that type of course. Instead, Michael has used the APCD as a way-out CAD tool, and is pulling off finer results with each attempt. I hope there will be more. |
Overall |
A worthy follow-up from the wackiest APCD designer around. Just as playable as the original, better to look at and a good giggle to boot. |
36/50 |
