LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Bill Bradley

Roserrow is Russell's second course, the other being Egyptian Sands. Russell is just 14 years old and may end up being a very good APCD designer in the not too distant future - always assuming that real life doesn't get in the way (as it probably will any day now!)

Technical Stuff

7572 yards Par 72
4 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 4 par 5's evenly distributed
Shortest hole 173 yards, longest hole 570 yards
4 tees

Included: Splash screen, short read-me (reproduced below), ambient sound

Not Included: Cameo, crowds, 3-D objects, pano, hole previews.

Difficulty: Very easy

The course is not locked.

General Impressions

I have to say that I much preferred Egyptian Sands to this attempt from Russell. Roserrow is neither a particularly challenging nor a particularly well made course. I don't want to put Russell off from designing golf courses on the APCD, but I do not really believe that he was too interested in the project himself when he designed Roserrow. I reproduce his entire Read-me file below:

Roserrow

This is the second course I have made, It was a previous attempt of mine which I gave it up on, but I found the CRZ again so thought I would give it another go!

The course is not too challenging; large greens and fairways. There is the occasional blind shot which will pop up a fair amount.

I hope you like the course and all, if you got anything to say about it just send me an E-mail

Thanks for your time,

Russ

I am sure that Russ put a lot more effort into Egyptian Sands with all the pyramids. Roserrow is a very forgiving course and is very playable particularly if you are looking for a course that won't challenge you too much. Perhaps you haven't played for a while or are new to the game or maybe you are going through a bad spell where you cannot hit straight. Then this is definitely a course I can recommend.

Textures and Planting

The textures are mainly standard Links 2003 textures with a custom sand texture and a couple of other custom textures in there. As far as planting goes the trees are very repetitive - Russell seems to have stuck to one type of tree and used it in all his forested areas. Some of the trees are floating - a feature which I have to confess I don't like. There is virtually no other planting of any other kind on the course.

Hole Layouts and Elevations

The hole layouts are all quite simple and similar - the trees which line the fairways are set well back {see screenshot 2} to allow the errant golfer to get away with his mistakes, or to allow the big hitter to really wind up and go for it. With no hole previews the blind tee shots {see screenshot 3} which occur at various places around the course will not do anything to endear the course to RTS-no top view golfers.

The greens are fairly flat {see screenshot 1) with only slight slopes where slopes do occur, which makes putting fairly easy for everyone.

The course is fairly flat all over, there are some elevations but they are more random than following a real rolling terrain. Unfortunately, where Russell has put elevations in he has not done much to take out sharp edges which leave many dark spots around the course which do detract from the course and can give odd bounces.

The bunkers are neither deep nor difficult which is fine because some of the bunkers are very much in the line of play - particularly the greenside bunkers.

Ambient Sound

There is sound, which is not in the least intrusive.

General Comments

I must offer my sincere apologies to Russell for the inordinate length of time it has taken me to complete this review - it should have been done several months ago but real life has very much got in the way of playing golf both IRL and on the computer for me and shows little sign of letting up for a while yet. Sorry about that Russ.

I said at the start that Russell could become a very good APCD designer one day and I stick by that statement. I think you have the basics Russ and would suggest that you stick at it but that you also start to look at some of the tutorials by some of the great designers we are lucky enough to have here on LC. I am sure you will learn an awful lot from them and may, one day have tutorials of your own up there.
