LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Brown Deer Park Golf Club Designed by Chas Demster

This is the 9th golf course designed by Mr. Demster. With such designs as Callaway Gardens Mountain View and the TPC at River Highlands, Mr. Demster has had a little bit of success designing golf courses for the Links golfing community. Every year I watch the GMO on television and I've always loved the course. I'd like to thank the designer for the opportunity to finally play this course on my PC.

About Brown Deer Park Golf Club:

Brown Deer Park is a municipal course located in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Brown Deer was originally designed in 1926 by George Hansen but after a couple of years of bad weather and poor maintenance the course was closed. In stepped two time US Open champion Andy North wanting a crack at redesigning Brown Deer and did such a good job the PGA Tour decided to move from Tuckaway Country Club and start playing here in 1994. The biggest claim to fame for the old Brown Deer was hosting the 1951 US Amateur Public Links Championship tournament. The Greater Milwaukee Open tournament was a fall event when they first came to Brown Deer but it moved to the summer season a few years ago. The course is only 6759 yards from the back tees which means this is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour.

Technical Aspects:

There are a few problems with the course that I would like to address. First, the course is pretty much dead flat. Very little slope is on the fairways and from watching the telecast since 1998, I know for a fact has a little more slope to it. The course slope rating of 132 easily backs that up. Secondly, some of the bunkers were poorly done. Some of the bunkers looked a little odd to me and some of the small bunkers looked like ditches. For example, looking back from the 17th tee, you can see most of the bunker on the right, but when looking at it from the dynamic view, the bunker is just sitting there, dead flat. Another problem was the planting. In various spots it looked unnatural to me. Brown Deer Park was designed in 1926 so this is an old fashioned style golf course. A better selection of trees with a little age would have been nice. It just seemed to me that the planting was just randomly placed and was patchy in spots. The textures used for this course were fine and matched very well, especially with the addition of a deep rough texture. Although I would like to point out that there isn't a "rough" texture on this course. There is the fairway, 1st cut of rough, and the deep rough. Making hitting the fairway an important factor. I don't know if the designer was able to get pictures of the course and a good yardage book, but I believe this course is done to the best of its ability without it. A nice tidy course, but there is a lot of meat on the bone before it's totally finished.

Shot Value:

Hitting the right side of the fairway is key. Brown Deer Park is a 2nd shot golf course. You'll find that you will have to shape shots if you end up on the wrong side of the fairway. Since there isn't a standard "rough" texture, you have to definitely find the fairway to have any chance of stopping the ball on the green close enough to have a birdie opportunity.

Extras:

The splash screens are nice, especially the splash screen of the clubhouse. The crowds added a special touch that give you a simulation of playing in the GMO. On the first hole, if you drive it far left enough, you'll notice a fountain in the middle of the water hazard. There was a lot of good 3d object use on this course. There were no hole previews for the course. However, the readme file can give you a little insight on the course, but it's not as helpful as on on-screen guide. Again, I don't know if the designer was unable to get a course yardage book, but it would have been beneficial to players that download this course. Playability:

The course is really easy if you play it right. In all the rounds that I played on the course, my iron game seemed to make this course easier than it should be. Playing in windy conditions is when the course shows it's real teeth. A fairly solid effort nonetheless.
