LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Designer: Even though Stewart Parker has released a multitude of courses, he is still relatively new to the design community, but with his courses ranging in size from 3-15mb, having Index Ratings from 0.81 to 1.00, and all being created using the APCD 1.1, people with both Links 2001 and 2003 are able to play his creations. His portfolio includes Bishopbriggs, Boat Of Garten, Dullatur Antonine, Dullatur Carrickstone, Hopeman, Southerness and Thornhill, and with an obvious love for bringing real courses to life, hopefully this designer will continue to release many more courses for years to come.

Course History: Designed by McKenzie Ross and built in 1947, Southerness is located on the Solway Coast, and with barely any elevation changes found throughout the course, golfer's playing a round here will be able to concentrate more on their game, and less about the walk. Rated by Golf Monthly as one of top 100 courses in Britain since 1990, Southerness has been home to many championship tournaments, and with the course situated away from the main population, people playing at the course will feel like there the only person in the world. More information can be found at http://www.southernessgolfclub.com.

Course: Classified as a Championship Links course, Southerness has been designed to test the accuracy of your shots, as with tight fairways and heavy rough, only players with a high regulation percentage will reap the rewards found on this real course from Scotland. With farmland on one side, and beach on the other, the hole designs are pretty straight forward, but as this course was made for the members of the club to have some fun with, true enjoyment in the playing experience will come from one's own imagination.

Favourite Hole: Hole 1 was my favourite hole on the course, as it provided a glance into the style of the course, and was a good risk/reward hole with the shortcut over the trees being an option for a shorter second shot into the green.

Playability: As the course is relatively flat, the true test of this course is staying in the fairways, so if you can keep your driving accuracy high, scores are going to be quite low. Unless you play the course in windy conditions, generally the bunkers won't come into play, and once on the green, with only minor slope and curve, birdies are going to be plentiful. Only being a Par of 69, Southerness is quite short, while as the Par 5's being easily reachable in two shots, players accustomed to target golf and attacking at the pins for birdie opportunities should enjoy playing this course.

AI Performance: The AI Golfer 'Simon' shot a -10 (59), with 76% Fairways and 83% Greens in Regulation, with a total of 24 putts.

Difficulty Index: 1.00

Technically: As this course was designed using the APCD 1.1, it is instantly recognisable as not having many of the advanced techniques seen in the present day with the APCD 1.5, and as the course itself is quite simple in it's design, it is hard to fully comprehend what the course is like in real life with the limited technical additions this course has. There were many instances of cloned planting, while for instance on Hole 5, there was a stream next to the fairway on the left that seemed to go nowhere, while on other holes it ran through the fairway, so that was quite weird. If the designer continues to design 2001 courses, it would be strongly recommended to make all the lines between the textures clean cut, the bunkers having lips, and simply to examine the course, so no technical errors are found. This can be achieved through beta testing and using the available tutorials for the APCD, and by doing this, the playing experience will also be even better.

Other: The course doesn't contain a cameo or custom flags, but does have Handicaps, Hole Previews and a Splash Screen, and even though they are not of the highest quality, as this course is real, looking at each hole preview allows the golfer to compare what the course is like in real life, to the version for Links.

Download Value: As the course is quite small at just over 10mb, fans of real courses or of the designers other work should find enjoyment when playing this course. Even though the zip file only contains the course file and a read-me, Southerness allows the golfer to concentrate on their own game, while enjoying the simplistic surroundings of the course. It will be burnt to CD, but it won't be staying on my hard drive.
