LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Designer: The designer has previously designed seven courses, but has never made them public. InterGolf Company mentions that its largest previous project was a,

'Fictional three course resort complex situated in the middle of a large city, called Midtown Golf Resort and Country Club.'

It was stated as including championship, community and links style courses, while a 2003 version of this course is scheduled for release in early 2004. This is the designer's first public release, coinciding with that of Cedar Ridge Golf Club. More information about Kurt Schoenberg and InterGolf Company can be found at http://www.intergolfco.com/contact.htm.

Course: Home of the 'InterGolf Championship', Superior Shores Golf Resort is noted as being a,

'Fictional course built along the shores of majestic Madeline Island in Lake Superior (Part of the Apostle Island chain.'

Although most of the holes are next to a shoreline, the water doesn't really seem to affect the golfer's shots or create risky situations, and without strong winds, won't come into play generally at all. The Par 3's were designed well (Screenshot 2 and 3), while as with the designer's previous course, all of the Par 4's seemed to be long and straight forward holes, which after a while gets quite repetitive. Generally the holes are very open, but with the bunkers placed in good positions, golfers will need to be accurate with their drives. All of the Par 5's are long holes, and even with a long second shot on a Par 5, due to the size of the greens throughout the course (Screenshot 5), getting an eagle would be quite a rarity. Hole 18 provides a great finish to the round, but as there was no clubhouse, the finishing hole doesn't seem to give the feeling of a truly tournament finish. With cloned trees found throughout the course, and not many good designs like Holes 16 and 18, the course seems to be more aesthetically built rather than challenging. The designer certainly has the talent to design great holes, and I'm sure in future releases, will do so for the full 18 holes.

Favourite Hole: Hole 16 was by far my favourite hole on the course (Screenshot 4), as it had a great design, was very scenic, and in windy conditions could prove to be a risky shot into the green with water on the left.

Playability: As all of the Par 5's are quite long, and because of that that, there are no easy eagle opportunities on the course. With many holes being right next to the shoreline, strong winds will be a factor, but by playing safe and hitting close to the pins, birdies should be easy to come by, as the greens generally aren't that hard to read. Although the course may seem tricky in some parts, accurate drives and consistent iron shots should allow the golfer to score quite low when playing this course.

AI Performance: The AI Golfer 'Simon' shot a -10 (62), with 85% Fairways and 77% Greens in Regulation, with a total of 22 putts.

Difficulty Index: 0.98

Technically: Looking straight ahead from the first tee, it is evident that the forest areas throughout the course were going to contain cloned trees (Screenshot 1), and although the forests were well done and look nice, using less cloned trees would have made the look much better. Stock textures, as with the designer's previous releases were used, while there was no evidence of seam blending throughout the course. As there was lots of shoreline next to the holes, the designer could have read tutorials into how to better make shoreline textures, as even though mastering such texture processes may be difficult, courses like Wellington Point show that it can be done. The bunkers didn't have any lips, but as with the rest of the course, looked clean joining into the following textures. It seemed that some custom sounds were added to the course, including a repetitive and extremely annoying one on Hole 17, but overall the course was cleanly put together and was an improvement from the designer's previous release, Cedar Ridge Golf Club. However, if the designer had read more tutorials on the APCD and used beta testers, the course could have been much better.

Other: The zip file didn't have a read-me, which all courses should come with, and rather had an assortment of pictures, including hole previews, the course logo, and splash screen. The hole previews, provide a good description and top view of the hole, and seemed to be much like what a golfer would find when seeing hole previews in real life at a golf resort. The splash screen and cameos were good, while custom objects included the flag, distance and tee markers.

When a course is released as a P2P, it immediately draws comparisons to that of all previous P2P releases, and in this case, there is no comparison. The designer has certainly shown that he has put a lot of effort into this course, but compared to the advanced techniques shown in other P2P releases, and in many free releases for that matter, it is not of the same quality. I would put this down to a lack of involvement with the Links community, as through the use of tutorials, help from other designers, and beta testers, this course could have been much better.

Download Value: Superior Shores Golf Resort is quite a large download at 65mb, which for many dial-up users is well out of their download range, but for people with fast internet and a few spare dollars, this may be worth getting, just so you can truly have a complete collection of courses.
