LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Bob Hankla
November 2003
Designer: Surrey Lake Short Course is designed by Ed Spence. From what I can tell, this is his third course following Gilligan's Island Golf Resort and Wolf Creek on Black Bear Ridge. Ed also released a nine-hole test course called Winter Rules Test.
Background: In the words of the designer: 'This 9 hole par 3 is part of the surrey lake complex and the full course is still being worked on. The course is set inside the full course starting just south of the number 1 tee and finishing up between the 18th green and 1st tee. The full course is out of bounds for the par 3 course as is the opposite true for the full course.'
Visuals: The overall look of the course is nice. The designer used a good variety of trees planted in deep grass. He used light, wispy grasses as underplanting. I would have liked more of this planted throughout the course. There were a few places with duplicated trees, but nothing overdone. There are several rock outcroppings, and a couple water hazards. He made good use of elevation changes for a par 3 course, which I thought added to the interest. The rock outcroppings looked good, but I thought they were missing something. I'm not sure whether the faces were too smooth, or the edges too sharp.
Layout: I thought the layout was pretty good for a par 3 course. Although there aren't many hazards, the elevation changes provided some interesting shots. I would have liked more hazards, but that's a personal preference. The hole lengths provided good variation.
Technique: I saw two items worth mentioning. The extrusions used with the cart parts were a little too high and stood out too much. I applaud the designer for even trying it; I've tried it without success. I also noticed what seemed to be corrupted objects in certain views. From certain places, the same object would appear 9 times on top of each other. I had the same problem before myself. I didn't see any other issues, such as pulled verts or sharp edges.
Favorite Hole: Definitely #2. I aced it. Enough said.
Recommendation: It's a large download at 43 meg for a 9-hole par 3. If you like to practice on par 3's, give it a try. I think the upcoming regulation course has potential based on what I see. Thanks to the designer for bringing it to us.
