LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is one of James Wood's first designs. It is pretty straight forward. It is a fictional parkland style course that is rather easy to score on. It measures at 6724 yards from the back tees, but the par 5s are extremely long. The par 4s are quite short and offer several different looks. Many are located near small ponds and dogleg at about 250 yards. Leave your driver in your bag...you can only really use it on a few holes. Many holes require a 3W or a 5W off the tee in order to set up for the best second shot.

Not much really sticks out on this design and since it was release a while back......it has been surpassed by many new courses for the honors of being in your course library. The trees that are planted are very limited, but wood planks and ponds can keep you company. The bunkers and ponds are all well shaped and show a nice lip. The fairways have been slightly extruded but offer no second cut of rough. The course is not really challenging, but it is a decent design from the early days of the APCD. Not many technical errors were found so it was not bad to play and looked pretty decent. James has really improved since this course and I'm sure he knows it was not his best work. It was rather fun to play and didn't look that bad.

Custom amenities: Many buildings were seen from time to time to make up for the lack of trees.

Greens: Usually they were round and without error. They really did not slope but where slanted with the rest of the course.

Fairways: They offered no second cut of rough and were quite square. They did not look natural. They did tend to gradually slant in a direction and stay that way for the hole.

Tee Boxes: Usually Stock in shape....they were highlighted with a cut of rough to act as trim. Very flat is usually they way you want them...and these were good.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: The best part of the course. The bunkers were nicely lowered and lips were inserted. The water hazards were done well also and some included some form of dirt lip to add more to the golf experience.

Planting: Very limited as I mentioned before. But was not too bad. The trees seemed to be at the best place to make you reconsider shot selection.

Best Hole: I chose the short 375 yard par 4 number 3 hole. It was a quaint dogleg left to an uphill green. It was guarded on three sides by bunkers. Not bad and looked the best from the tee.

Overall: A decent early APCD release. The designer has released much better work since then and I hope to see more from him. Although I enjoyed playing the course...it really shows it's age and does not stand the test of time well. With the great work being done these days...it probably wouldn't be looked at much. I would score it higher if reviewed after its release. But I must compare it to today's work.
