LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Bob Hankla August 2003

Designer: This is Scott Rine's second course following the Wilderness Trail Golf Course.

Course: Hunter's Springs is a fictional design of unknown locale. The readme file included does not give any information as far as location or origin of the course. I would call it parkland, but some may consider it woodland. The course is fairly attractive to look at, with a good variety of trees and underplanting vegetation. Most of the trees and vegetation is planted in a green brush texture that plays as a hazard. The textures used are stock 2001, and are seam blended in places. I find it interesting that the 2003 feature of seam blending was used with 2001 textures. The fairways, greens, and bunkers are blended, but the transition into the green brush was not. This would have been something to consider. The bunkers were done well. The only suggestion might be to drop them a little below the surrounding area to create slopes down into them. Water is not prevalent on the course, but where it appears it is attractively planted to look somewhat like marshes rather than ponds. As far as hole layouts, there are a good variety of hole lengths and shapes. Most of the trouble that I found was the green brush that played as a hazard. It seemed to be close enough to the fairway that if you were off a little off it was always nearby. The fairways are a little on the narrow side, but nothing extreme. Elevation was effectively used throughout the course, creating nice slopes in the fairways, and framing the holes nicely with the planting. The greens have some roll to them, and in places are heavily sloped, but nothing over the top. They provided a fair challenge. There isn't a lot of risk/reward present, but that doesn't mean it isn't a challenge. I would consider it average difficulty. Technically, the only problem I saw was some sharp edges at texture transitions. They appeared primarily at green edges and where the rough met the green brush, but never effected play at all. Overall, an attractive course that is solidly built. There are hole previews provided, but no tournament options or other extras.

Favorite Hole: My favorite hole would be number 10, a 594-yard par 5. The first part of the fairway winds around one of the marsh areas to a landing area at an angle to the tee. With the narrow fairway, and green brush and marsh near, it's a pretty small target. The second shot is a fairway wood with a mid-fairway bunker to watch for. A half wedge is left to a heavily sloped green. This is not a sure birdie for a par 5.

Recommendation: I recommend it to those that like a more traditional layout without forced water carries and other risks. It's nice to look at and not a large download. Thanks, Scott, for your hard work.
